Mr. Coffee part 2

Got a email this morning the coffee pot wont turn on again.. I guess that zener diode failed again??

Here is the past thread

»Mr Coffee wont heat

Any clues on how to make it more robust?

Buy another one? Obviously the model that you have is shitty.

Figure out why it failed and fix it with a 'better' part or modify the circuit to be more reliable.

Given the reviews on others I looked at they pretty much fail the same way..

I thought last time it was the relay.. Humm now Zener, well what wattage Zener did you replace it with? I guess that got moved to a different message thread, I seem to remember something about a zener way back when. In any case, 3 easy things will make a zener last longer, Higher wattage, better heat dissipation, put a TVSS device in parallel with it with a voltage rating just above the Zener voltage. There are others, but this is a good start, of course the real question is why did it fail, once you know that the solution is self evident.

I haven't opened it yet but I can't remember if I found the direct replacement but I think in that other thread I wrote was was on the first ZD that failed and it was suggested that I use the zener diodes from radio shack and putting the two anode to cathode.

if it is a bad zener, a 1 watt(at whatever voltage the original was) should do the trick. they probably only used 1/2 watt at the most.

I'm not sure if I posted the part number or I think someone else did I will have to check in the morning.

The manufacturer of the Mr. Coffee products are well known for component failure. Like you I used to fix them but finally got tired of it and started purchasing from another manufacturer.

The thing is reviews on other well known brands are not that much better after a few years of use.. same stuff.. i.e. wont brew, wont get hot and so on.

Since I stopped buying Mr. Coffee, I have not had a coffee maker fail. We have just retired them because we wanted something new. At the current time I have a Krups setting on the counter that is 7 years old. The replacement has been setting next to it for almost a year now, just can't get the wife to start using it. Additionally we do not use it every day or for extended periods. With that said our usage cycle has not changed over the last 45 years.

I understand what you are saying about reviews, but Mr. Coffee has a very long history of problems/premature failure. Their track record is just not one I am not willing to deal with.

I also have a Krups -- a friend gave it to me sometimes in the late 80's because it was leaking. I used a tiny bit of silicone to fix it, and it works fine ever since.

Yup, they used to make a lot better electronics back in the 80's!

lol a lot of stuff pre 90's was better made... I don't understand if you make your stuff to fail it's a trade off because people will think your stuff is trash.. So your idea of making money because people will keep replacing it seems like it will not all work out..

the trick is they sell it very cheap compared to a good one, so they sell more, just like why did people actually want products made in china etc. and put many U.S. businesses out of business, instead of buying U.S. made products. it's because they are cheaper!. people realize they are buying trash!.

Take a look at one of these instead of the Keurig. About a nickel per cup compared to $0.60 for the Keurig.

I'm on my second one now after my first one failed after brewing 5 cups per day for three years straight.

They sell for less than $10 at Walmart.

I have one of those for my office, it works quite nicely and prevents others from pilfering all of your good beans. As far as at home, I still have a 4(?) cup percolator from the 1970's that works just fine for brewing daily coffee (don't make em like that anymore).

Edit: Apparently Farberware still makes them.

If it had a clock on it I would say maybe it would be pretty good
