Smart meter plus
Got my smart meter a while ago. The city-owned power company ran fiber to its meters and sells cable/internet/phone service through it, busting the former (horrible) Comcast/ATT duopoly. They're making a profit too.

I have a synchronous 100 MPS connection and HD cable for $200/mo. To the left in the picture is the disused phone connection, and out of frame is the old Comcast box.

TVA and epb, Viva la socialisme!

Can't say much for the aesthetics. That installation is a visual disaster.

Glad to see that this is working out for you folks in Chattanooga. We never got the chance to do it here in Memphis, thanks to Time-Warner's legal shenanigans; it cost them big, too, though - TW is gone now with Comcast in its place, and a huge number of folks around here have switched over to satellite or Uverse.

But I've read some complaints here on the forums about EPB not being at all friendly towards companies that want to piggy-back on their fiber, which I find a bit surprising. I can understand a need maybe to do this in the early days - a temporary pseudo-monopoly in order to guarantee payback for the capital expenditure of the fiber installation - but if this turns into a long-term thing then I (as a consumer) would be most displeased.

That cable coming out of the meter is a 120 volt tap to power the ONU.

It really doesn't look bad at all.
