Re: [Speed] Northeast speed changes coming.

Anyone know if the upload speeds will match the new tier speeds?

For example if I check the Comcast Shopping web site for my location it lists Blast as 30/6 with PowerBoost® (it's really 25/4), Extreme 50 as 50/15 and 105 as 105/20. Apparently Extreme 50 and 105 don't bother with PowerBoost® since it isn't mentioned for those two tiers.

Does this mean that Blast will now be 50/15 and Extreme will be 105/20?

I would think so. It'd be stupid to do otherwise when all you have to do is send a file to modem that is known to already work (It'll be interesting to see how they do this file wise. Do they send us the Extreme 50 file for Blasters or do they alter the Blast file to 50/15 speeds?)

It would also explain how they'd do their speeds:

Standard would be 25/5
Blast: 50/15
Extreme 50 would now be 105/20
And Extreme 105 would go away, leaving room for a future Extreme 300 package or an upgrade for those that already have 105 at the 200 a month price point.

Nothing's been mentioned that states that the standard tier speeds would be increased (either here or in the radio commercial). As such they'd end up staying 16/2 (or whatever they currently are).

Huh. That would be disappointing. But I'm a Blast user, so I wouldn't have to worry about that at the moment. Guess we'll just have to sit back and wait and see what they do, eh?

Sounds like Comcast is also getting ready to reveal their new 250Mbps tier. »Comcast Exploring 250 Mbps Service [130] comments

So:
Blast = 50
Extreme = 105
Extreme2 = 250

I'm assuming Delaware is included in the Northeast for Comcast's purposes. I would find it hard to believe they wouldn't update their home market. Plus we have FiOS competition.

The question is: why would Comcast only make speed tier changes in the Northeast and leave the rest of their footprint on the current speed tiers?

They wouldn't. This news first broke from someone working for CC in the NE then came the radio commercial from Philly. CC is based there so I guess they are phase 1. All D3 markets should be upgraded the same. Isn't Comcast pushing a national identity with a national channel lineup and speed tiers?

If they plan on upgrading the 50/15 users to 105/20, then I guess the $250 fee to subscribe to the existing 105 tier was/is not actually necessary.

That make sense. I guess those people in the other markets have something to look forward to, hopefully, the wait is not too long since we have Blast. 50 Mbps will be sweet!!!!

Good to hear. And I had been thinking about upgrading to the 105Mbps tier from my 50Mbps tier so this is perfect timing.

Anyone know anything about when exactly we can expect it to happen? A week, two weeks, a month?

Anyone have a D2 modem on Comcast 50 right now? What's the best sustained speed that you get?

To me, that seems like the biggest hassle for Comcast.Not just updating a modem file, but having to physically replace all the D2 modems people are renting on Blast.

I doubt they'll be kind enough to let people know they need to do it though (to fully utilize the 50 down).

It seems to be a stretch to consider Virginia in the Northeast, but I will be happy to get the speed tier upgrade sooner than later.

Pretty sure Comcast has been handing out D3 modems for Blast for awhile now. My guess is that, these days, 25 mbps is about all you can get on the download side out of Blast, though on the upstream side a single channel has no problems hitting 20 Mbps (I've seen it before, pre-US-bonding).

Technically, a single 256 QAM modulated, 6.4 MHz wide, 5.120 Msym/sec symbol rate downstream carrier can provide a real life throughput of 38.1 Mbps.

LOL! That was my thought too. I do think the Rappahannock River makes a much better Mason-Dixon line though.

The last upgrade I got when I went from 8/2 to 16/2 last year said by August and this was March 18th. I rebooted my hardware and was pulling 16/2 that day. Hope it comes just as swiftly for you guys.

Comcast has been listed D3 as required for Blast for pretty much as long as their DOCSIS page has been available.

I never saw speeds anywhere close to that with a D2 modem.

It has been done with a D2 modem before. Optimum Online Boost when it was 30/5 did it on D2. But Comcast chose not to do that, they stopped doing D2 in the final days of 16/2. Any new installs for 16/2 or higher were given D3 modems. Now with this news, D2 is definitely an obsolete point. Time to switch those modems out, eh?

Well, if you're on Performance or lower you're still fine. But you shouldn't buy a new D2 modem for more than $20.

Funny how, in many areas, DSL speeds are so far below cable that a D2 modem can outclass them with no issue

Could be, but if you're just starting out, especially if you're planning any upgrades in the future or owning your own modem, D3 would be the way to go. A check of Best Buy shows they STILL have 5101 D2s for sale at 60 bucks. Why do they still carry 6 year old models at such expensive prices?

I wonder how long it'll be before Comcast EOL's all D2 modems in favor of D3 or better equipment? I say 1 1/2 to 2 years.

What speed tier were you actually subscribed to at the time ? Just because 38.1 Mbps capacity can be provided doesn't mean you will get that. The config file / rate caps for the provisioning will always govern.
