Re: [OOL] Can't get max boost speeds on wireless laptop; normal?

30mbps down at 30ft is great, you're doing very well. Max PHY layer in the 2.4GHz band (20MHz channel width) is 130mbps. 5GHz band (40MHz channel width) you can get 300mbps, but the range is a lot shorter.

Allow for overhead, errors, the fact you'll never see those PHY layer speeds in the real world when you're not sitting on top of the router, and 30mbps is very good.

An OOL tech support told me with a router I should have max 5mbps difference from my original speed. Not 20-25mbps! That's why I'm inquiring.

Not everything tech support says is true. Wireless performance is extremely variable. The answer to why it drops has already been provided.

That router is not a gigabit router. The lowest model is the N600 gigabit option. Look on the ports and specs, only supports 10/100 not 10/100/1000.

GigE won't do any good for what he needs. He needs 5 GHz, 40MHz channel. Then he will get his full 30mbps if he's close. 100 vs 1000mbps Ethernet will make zero difference.
