Billing

My neighbors just switched to WOW, install tomorrow or thursday. They had Uverse, but travel alot for long periods and couldn't easily get someone on the phone turn service off for a month or two at a time when they leave, so switched to WOW with the ability to call in and get better support being the main concern for them. TV and internet are extremely basic for them, and phone needs unlimited long distance. So I find listed right on WOW's packages page a bundle of Digital basic TV, 2mbps internet, and WOW advanced phone for $95/mo 102/mo with HD it says. They called and don't like to argue or haggle, but just told me they were told the monthly bill was going to be $122. They really got taken advantage of for upsells and stuff is my guess just because they are elderly and don't understand. Again, this is great customer service? If then knew exactly what they wanted, mentioned that bundle, it is a shame they the person on the line talked them into other things, or just charged a higher price than the site lists. They seem happy because it is still cheaper than Uverse, but still seems wrong that they didn't even call and ask questions, they knew exactly what bundle they wanted.

Thought I would give a quick call to WOW to see about this and WOW a friend, which the guy told them was done after ordering online, when online it specifically says to be eligible you have to do it while ordering. On hold for 17min before I hung up. In the past I used to never be on hold more than 5 before the first person answered.

Well, you might be jumping the gun a little bit. That price doesn't include the EMTA rental cost ($5) or the new network line fee ($4). So that's an extra $9 right there. Not sure if the $122 includes taxes or not, but that could be part of it. Also, if they went with a DVR, that is another $10 or $13 depending on whether it is a std DVR or an HD DVR. But to your point, I'm sure they could have negotiated some discounts.

They did end up getting a DVR, but they didn't know and don't need one. The point is I told them exactly what package to get, and on the phone they were talked into the extra little stuff like that just because they didn't know better. When they called in knowing exactly what package to get, trying to get extra upsells was not needed. Also they didn't have HD service at all before but have an HD TV. WOW led them to believe they need an HD box on an HDTV, granted they do for HD, but they just want standard tv wall to TV. Not needing a box at every tv is another one of the reasons they left uverse.
They knew exactly what package they wanted, and were taken advantage of because they didn't know better.

And the WOW a friend is another thing. The salesman that set them up was specifically asked about doing it, I had the referral code ready to give him like the website says, and he said no, that is taken care of all online after ordering. However the website says to be eligible you have to have a referral code while ordering.

Every company is going to try and upsell products and that is across the board. If your neighbors are that ignorant that they cant stick to the order then who's fault is it really? People need to read and dont be afraid to say no.
