| reply to Draiman What's the best way to insulate the stairs? Should I install a riser then fill it with loose insulation then cap it off with the tread or should I do a faced batt towards the riser then another faced batt towards the tread? -- IF YOU FIND ANY MISTAKES IN MY WORK...Please consider that they are there for a purpose. DraimanLet me see those devil horns in the sky join:2012-06-01 Kill Devil Hills, NC | reply to Draiman The only feedback I've gotten was from a co-worker on this who sides with loose fill so I guess I'm heading that direction. |

| reply to Draiman I'd do loose fill but I'd add a 6mil vapor barrier onto the stinger riser area for the first riser then install the riser. Next I'd fill the cavity with loose fill then cover the stinger tread area and install a tread. I'd do that starting at the bottom all the way up to the top. Then you'll have as much insulation as possible plus a vapor barrier. |

| said by TA63:Why do you want to insulate the stairs? Did you look at the pictures? It's unconditioned under the stairs and they plan to condition above the stairs. You insulate and vapor barrier between that space. The only time you don't insulate anything is if it's conditioned on both sides. |

| reply to Critsmcgee I have looked at the pictures.
I saw the vents in the roof, but figured that insulating/conditioning that space was a long ways off.
What sticks in my memory is this view with the stairs already closed in. »Re: Garage addition -- The talented hawk speaks French. |

| reply to Draiman Originally we planned to wait 3-5 years to finish the area but once the inspector made us firewall the ceiling in the garage it accelerated the plan since it's almost done anyways. I'll take a picture of the insulation this week-end but there is about $1,000 in fiberglass upstairs waiting for me to install it. If you figure the average is like $12 a roll there is like 80 rolls up there. I'll have the entire garage insulated by March 2013 so all that will be left is drywall. We're going to have heating installed next month.
Right now I'm just in the buying stage with the stairs. I'll be buying the risers, treads, insulation, etc. to do them in Dec./Jan. but I won't actually install them until the drywall is in so the risers/treads can be cut to the correct length to be flush with the drywall.

| reply to Draiman I bought all the stuff to build the knee-wall doors this week. I still need to frame out the second knee-wall door opening in the garage. While I'm at it I'm also going to cut out 2 openings in the house upstairs and frame them out for knee-wall doors. I'm going to make 4 identical knee-wall doors.
I plan to install two 3" hinges and a Combi-Bolt on each knee-wall door. I'll use rigid insulation on the back of the door to get it up to like R-13 just like the walls. I'll weather strip the sides of each frame so the knee-wall doors close tight. -- IF YOU FIND ANY MISTAKES IN MY WORK...Please consider that they are there for a purpose. | reply to Draiman I moved the tool chest into the garage last week-end. I'm going to try to break down the work bench then move it into the garage and reassemble it this week-end. I also moved the wide area mower, snow blower, and other power equipment into the garage last week-end. It's slowly starting to feel like a real garage! -- IF YOU FIND ANY MISTAKES IN MY WORK...Please consider that they are there for a purpose. I started the knee wall doors yesterday. I built the first frame. This week-end I'll build the door for it then install the pre-hung knee wall door. |

I have almost all the insulation for the garage. I'm short about 16 rolls of R-30 unfaced which I'm going to try to get this week-end. It should be right around $1,000 in fiberglass insulation rolls. It's about $850 in the picture now. The next part will be installing it all!!! -- IF YOU FIND ANY MISTAKES IN MY WORK...Please consider that they are there for a purpose. I got back to the knee wall door this week-end. I just need to install some compression door molding and the 2" rigid insulation to finish it up. |
