Re: Garage addition So just to be clear no one cares if you call it a tie or a joist. Moving on so we're back on topic. The drywall has been finished and the stairs got trim between the risers and treads. I still need to putty up all the nail holes and do some light sanding before it's ready for finish. It doesn't appear I'll get to the handrail for another few weeks either. |

Out of curiosity, why did you do the finish work on the stairs before the paint? |

Once the drywall is sealed up it will most likely remain primed only for the next 3-5 years possibly longer. |

I was just wondering...OP...
why do you change usernames faster than changing your oil in the car? |

why do you change usernames faster than changing your oil in the car? Like you said. It has nothing to do with the thread.
The real question to be asking is: "What is a Porta Potty doing on the corner of the road across the street?". I can't believe no one caught that in the left window of the second to last picture. |

 | reply to Draiman
It didn't go quite as well as I hoped on the priming but it's coming along. |

Risk being chastised by you for derailing a thread that had ran its course many months ago? Certainly not! Please stay on topic, btw. Porta-potties have nothing to do with your garage. |

Has anyone used Bona FlooPoly before? I'm thinking about using it for the stairs and handrail. It's used by the NBA for their floors. |

I haven't used the Bona personally but my parents used it before. Like Msradell said it's pricey but worth it. -- "Trust Me I'm The Doctor!" -Doctor Who |

The upstairs is pretty much done on priming. Next the stairway and hallway. |

Anyone install baseboard before the flooring? We plan to do carpet at some point. It looks like some people say install the baseboards like 3/8" off the subfloor while others say just install it flush with the subfloor. |

Coma Thanks StevePremium join:2001-12-30 NirvanaLand | Use a piece of scrap baseboard as a spacer when installing, its the easiest way I've found and it will leave enough space for the carpet to go under it.

Definitely use a piece of baseboard as a spacer and install it up about 7/16". I have never ever seen baseboard installed down on the subfloor for carpet. I imagine the carpet guys would be cussing you alot if you tried that. |

I imagine the carpet guys would be cussing you alot if you tried that. In the house they did the baseboards to the subfloor then did hardwood floors. In some rooms there's carpet over the hardwood as well. Going forward with the garage I like the idea of using a piece of baseboard as a spacer. Simple and effective. Thanks! |

With carpet, you should put the base in without shoe, and before carpeting. Paint it (prime and paint both sides if wood, or stain and seal if nice wood), then touch up after carpet install (they can't help bumping it but can minimize).
With HW flooring, I put base in after flooring, and shoe to hide any space/gaps.
Oh, Thanks for showing the progress! Pretty cool... -- Splat |
