[Cable TV] Cable without an STB (QAM tuner on my TV)

Is there an way to figure out what channel is what number on the TV without the STB? Also why is it giving me 4 TV Cogeco's and 3 Weather Network's (Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener)? There are a bunch of channels that have the small upper box in the right corner of the screen for the VOD previews, lots of music (all of the 300's and the radio) and lastly a few 'scrambled program' and 'program has no content' . Also I have notice that a lot of the analog stations have been removed.

Not really, it changes from area to area.

Not 100% sure about this one, but it could be based on how many major cities you're located near.

IIRC 'program has no content' just means that the signal isn't strong enough to tune into, or the signal is blocked. There will definitely be channels you wouldn't be able to get based on encryption and the reason a lot of the analog stations have been removed is for our Digital Migration (see »Digital Transitions for a better description by Marcer).

Well I think I do get CTV Two HD on 16-1 and CTV HD on 16-2. I also get TVO HD and NFL HD and thats all the HD that I can get without the STB. Those come in as 1080i and Dolby 5.1.
I also did see a an 480p station I think that was one of the VOD stations. Why does most of the digital stations come in as 480i and not 480p?

Those stations that are showing as 480i will be our standard definition stations (i.e. non-HD).

I can't really comment on the 480p station because as far as I'm aware a standard definition TV shouldn't be able to display it (unless the customer has an Enhanced Definition television) so I can't see it being available and limiting the people who can view it.

In the interests of full disclosure, I have never plugged my connection directly into my HDTV so some of this is purely conjecture on my part.

Even with the STB's will Cogeco switch to 1080p? I figure well since they are giving away HDMI cables with the DCX700HD (which is capable of 1080p) might as well I guess.

The source signal they receive is in 480i, not 480p. 480p was primarily used for DVDs, and - for a very short period of time - Fox when they were still in transition to 720p, but otherwise no distributed network content is in 480p.

The VOD station most likely broadcasts in 480p because the source content (a DVD, or something similar) is also 480p.

I do find this irritating, being a long time analogue subscriber, we got one of those disappointing "Digital Adapters". They're absolutely horrible on a LCD TV. I get a few SD/HD signals on the native tuner.. but a lot of channels that were previously unscrambled (Space, Spike, Showcase) are now encrypted digitally.. even though I'm on a package that should have access to them.

I do miss repeats of TNG & VOY, but, I'm not upgrading to an HD package just so I can get a STB capable of SD digital output.. that's downright silly.

Oh well.

I have an older computer game and it has an preview of 'Watch Star Trek: TNG on the new TNN' wow that goes way back. I think that was way before the time of Spike.

And yeah 480i does look bad on an LCD TV.

Depends on the TV. The 42" LCD in my bedroom has a fantastic upconverter that can make 480i look fantastic and identical to 480p. My 52" Plasma does not, so I have to do 480p SD override on my Shaw box to get acceptable SD PQ, but the HD quality is so far and away better than the 42" LCD that it's worth it.

So, if 480i looks like crap on your HD television, it's your television's problem, not the content.

Uh....download all of them?.....I'm going to say you were receiving them previously as there was a filter that wasn't connected....that's why you don't have access to them plain and simple...because otherwise those channels would come through on digital...

So....that being said, back to the OP....its not possible to figure out where the channels are as they are moved around seamlessly from the users standpoint...not sure why they move around though.

What?

I meant channels that I used to get as part of the Analouge Value Pak were replaced with encrypted digital equivalents.. It's annoying that they're doing that.
