Goodbye for now:)

I will still pop in but I am moving back to OOL simply because of price and WIFI Hot Spots. Seems like I got a good deal (more for less). If and when I do come back I will probably go the NEt Talk route for the phone.. Prices simply too much and with VZ Wireless prices going up that was the nail in the coffin.........stay tuned.

Good luck on the OOL side of things. I admire your courage for going back, I know I never want to deal with the nightly slowdowns ever again.

There shouldn't be any slowdowns with DOCSIS3. I never had a slowdown on OOL even with DOCSIS1.1 and 2.0. People give CV a lot of crap, but they actually run a pretty decent network.

To the OP: enjoy the switch. Did you get regular OOL or Boost Plus?

It may be different with docsis 3, but back when they were 1.1/2.0 i would drop below 2 mbit down during peak hours.

Doesn't it depend on whether the node is saturated? Whether it's DOCSIS 1.1, 2.0, or 3.0, if there is not enough bandwidth to handle the amount of people using it at even given time, won't the speeds slow down?

From what I've heard from those currently on OOL the historical problems with performance seem to be mostly just that - historical. Perhaps this is not the case everywhere though.

When I left OOL for FiOS it was not due to network speed. CV actually did well for that part of the service, and ironically it was their video (TV) that was suffering.

OOL typically doesn't overload their nodes that much. A few years ago, their customer base started expanding in certain areas and some nodes did become congested. DOCSIS2 increases the bandwidth per channel (on the upload side at least), so that helped slightly but they mostly used it to increase speed tiers. DOCSIS3 allows for channel bonding, so the same number of users per node is now split over 4-8 channels, increasing the available BW per user. There haven't been any congestion issues with DOCSIS3 modems (so far).

Did you make any attempt to get FIOS to give you some discount?

Last year I switched my elderly mother to FIOS because it was so much cheaper then OOL.

Now with a $79.95 triple play, free DVR for a year, and free ipod, OOL is much cheaper then FIOS.

Seriously thinking of getting her switched back. Internet speed is not really an issue with her needs.

Fios was still going to cost more $$ even after new discounts

With CV i'm getting more content at a lower price compared to VZ

I switched from OOL Internet to Fios Internet almost two years ago. First I was experiencing super slow down lower than 1mbps during peak hours. OOL kept sending techs out who just laughed and said yea the node is saturated we can do nothing. Finally after 20 or so calls they finally hooked me up with a 3.0 modem. A few weeks later I started losing connection to the Internet multiple times a day. Once again cablevision didn't care. So it was time for a switch. Best choice I ever made in my life. Good luck with Cablevision. I will never want to go back.

But In areas like Brooklyn there are more OOL Customers is one spot which will create more congestion.

Which means they should of fixed the issue faster instead of dragging it out. I am not sure how the currect OOL situation in my neighborhood is, most of my neighbors switched to FiOS

It is better with DOCIS 3. But still can slow down and suck. I have been in Dutchess county for 2 years (almost) and it sucks badly here. I live in an apartment complex with 360 units or so. Took me 6 months of having techs come out before I got a DOCIS 3 out of them. Granted I didn't stay on top of them as much as I could have (I do have to go to work).

Anyway it is still very hit or miss. I can have a week with no slow downs. Then it can be slow ever night during primetime for a few days and the back up. I have 5 channels bonded. Looks like they are just starting to pull FIOS fiber through the complex. I will very likely be switching.

As another poster said Brooklyn seems to be another area where it is really bad (even worse then up here).

My previous apartment in Westchester I never had any issues with the Internet. I had a 2.0 modem.

I had the slowdown issues really badly on Time Warner Cable in Staten Island. Everything here is overloaded, finally being able to switch to FiOS was great, they recently finished installing in my complex.
