| No physical keyboards on new blackberries Looks like RIM continues to shoot itself in the foot. They've announced the first batch of new BB's ruining BB 10(qnx os) will not have physical keyboards.
I for the life of me can't figure these guys out, if I buy a BB today, it's already obsolete since it won't run the new OS (shades of Osborne Computers)so why would I buy one. Then they botch they're number one feature and get rid if the physical keyboard.
If the new OS and phone don't take off its over by Christmas, in fact they need to launch before the new Iphone comes out, otherwise it will be overshadowed. Pundits are already making direct comparisons with M$'s new "tablets" with the iPad, and Microsoft can more then weather the storm and losses while trying to gain market share, RIM on the other hand, not so much.
»www.thestar.com/business/science···confirms -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | They announced that months ago (or at least at Blackberry World) ....and that BB10 devices with keyboards would be following shortly thereafter.
By releasing a keyboard-less model first, it competes directly with iPhones and all the other Android keyboard-less phones.
People who want a model with a keyboard are harder for RIM to lose as customers than those who move on for a touchscreen phone from Apple/Samsung, et. al. |

It's also true it's harder to move away from keyboards but if RIM went away tommorow completely, people would adapt to touch only devices. |

 | reply to elwoodblues So what happens with the Cake Lady TV commercial? about how important the keyboard is for her business and try doing that on touch screen for 1000s of e-mails? |

*phew* I love my keyboard.
Why does RIM insist on trying to compete with iPhone. They can't win that game. It's so freaking simple and yet they're running around chasing after Apple. They don't get that I want a tank in my hand. Simple as that. No toys, I use very few apps as they bore me and I don't have time and even if I did I wouldn't indulge. I wish they'd grow a pair and stand on their own 2 feet. -- Fluent in 3 languages: English, Sarcasm and Sexual Innuendo.

RIM only dreams of actually competing with the iPhone...yes, they will offer a keyboardless phone, but that's about where the comparison ends...the sales figures have spoken, and will continue to. -- People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Agreed!....They're looking after a consumer market which they honestly can't win against...they still have business/industry type contacts and government contracts...stick with that, does it mean the shareholders get angry? ...Sure, but you know what, forget that market....
I don't get touchscreen people, if that thing ever fails or you smash it like my friend at work recently did...and now he has to touch a certain part of the screen to answer calls that come in...funny part is, it isn't where the spot to answer is ...I think its funny...
Whoever thought touchscreens were amazing, is on crack...a scratch, and the screen gets screwed......that's my rant about touchscreens. |

Keep hating on touchscreens, Apple and Samsung will keep making the world's best smartphones without you. :P ...It happens....things get dropped. You can't type properly on them, they leave such little space for error, I'd get frustrated if I had one...
I have an iPad 2.....I'm selling it. Why? Because the damn thing is too frustrating. Sure its great with apps and crap, but when you can't type the website out properly on it, its useless to me.
If you worked in my industry though, you'd hate touchscreens, that's probably where I get most of the hate from. But I am frustrated with my iPad....and I've got about 15 people lined up to buy it...sure I take a small loss, but selling it for $350 when you can get new for $419...I'm happy because it was just sitting there collecting dust.
And again they aren't the worlds best smartphones....I want my phone to dial, and text...I don't need my phone to be a Metal detector....or a GPS....telling me to turn left into a river.....
If they want to make them without me....that's just fine by me. |

I hope so. People say touch is more efficient and I'm a dinosaur for preferring tactile buttons; however I can type far faster, without looking, than anyone else I've met.
I might be a minority though, as I just use my phone for email, chat (bbm, text, whatsapp), and phone calls so I don't need a bigger screen for multimedia, apps or web browsing... but I'm almost always surrounded by computers and I have a tablet. |

| reply to elwoodblues Thing is this whole "Keyboard or not Keyboard" thing comes down to what you are used to using versus how efficient you are using it.
In my particular situation, with only one hand available to type with, keyboards are a milstone and only serve to slow me down. I would much rather have a well done touchscreen interface (or voice recognition) because of that.
Of course it also helps that my regular speaking voice is "accent neutral" which voice recognition systems seem to love.
Thing is Blackberry saw the writing on the wall and tried to "me too it" instead of coming out with a new way to "Just Do It" so now people don't know *what* Blackberry stands for anymore and that's what's hurting them IMO.

| It's going to be a big thing, the next shiny new thing.
Apple has people brainwashed into thinking the "Apple OS" is on their computer, phone and tablet... Microsoft is actually going to do that and people that hit stumbling blocks in migrating their experiences on Apple, those won't exist with Microsoft's products.
iCloud works pretty good but Microsoft's offering seems to be the next level. |

 | I use a windoze based program that interfaces with my car, it has a small hardware module that connects via the obd port of the vehicle and if windoze8 will run it Ill ditch my netbook in a heartbeat.`So I agree if they get this right it has the potential to take a big chunk out of the Apple cult. -- »www.timslaw.ca/ |
