 | reply to dbirdman said by dbirdman:It cost me about $80.00 to get Exede 5. Oh wow. $80. Do you perhaps think that wasn't significantly subsidized? I'm with a Coop-Rea (Electric Coop)...I have no idea the wholesale user cost for them when compared to Wildblue user cost.
They have one dedicated installer, who also works electric lines, etc., when not doing WB/Exede business.
I assumed $80.00 may have paid for the equipment, with a "free install." Since I had WB installed equipment, it took less than a hour to flip-em.
Further, there is no monthly rental change for equipment...just $49.95/month...basic 10 Gig package...at 5 mbps plan.
Subsidized...with these variables, unknown. Installer was "lining them up" so mileage was minor for each customer, and there were new customers being installed, with a different price I assume.
Hence, bean counting is not an easy when installer is a regular lineman...and for this REA, power comes first, then WB/Exede. |

That's a no brainer...it cost them $$$ to lease transponders. |

I guess that would depend on the equipment. I have some idea what the wholesale cost of satellite equipment is in general, and more specifically when it comes to Hughes and iDirect, but I have no idea what "equipment" was involved in the upgrade. If either the modem or BUC or both were involved the cost was significantly higher than $80. LNBs can be bought for that.
Typically satellite modems are several hundred dollars wholesale, rising into the thousands for the really good ones. Transmitters start at about $150 in the 1-watt range and rise into the stratosphere as the wattage goes up. -- Motosat self-pointing dishes: 1.2-meter XF-3 on 93W, .74 meter G74 on 127W, SL-5 HD DirecTV|idirect 3100|Hughes HN7000S|Verizon UMW190 Air Card|1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge Bus "Blue Thunder"|Author of hnFAP-Alert, PC-OPI and DSSatTool |

| I saw plenty of upgrades even before that statement was mad, lets see.... 1. rollover of unused bandwidth up to 1250 MB on my account.
2. double my plan speed + My plan speed was 2Mb/s down and I was getting 4 to 5Mb/s down any time of day.
3. Rollover of my unused free tokens from month to month
4. an original increase from my plan limit of 500 MB per day to a total of 625 MB per day.
5. a 50/50 chance of getting tech support in the US. (I generally got US support anyhow because I was a business customer but I am speaking for the residential side as seen through a friend and my nephew.)
While these are not ground breaking advances, they are signifigant and I think most will agree that they are plenty good enough to qualify as some of the improvements promised. So over these "few months" there have been signifigant improvements. -- HughesNet elite plan/.74 dish w/1watt trans. / 9000 modem / 3 computers on a linksy's wired network |

ViaSat is the OEM designer and OEM seller, I believe....like DISH & Echostar, it would be to their interests to break even on equipment sales and get consumers on-board their birds.
Btw, I wonder if Echostar will manufacturer overseas Gen4 equipment? |

Btw, I wonder if Echostar will manufacturer overseas Gen4 equipment? Hughes is the designer, manufacturer, and seller of their own modems. Doesn't change the fact that they are expensive buggers, partly due to FCC rules and regs (for example if you were to compare them to the cost of cable modems which don't have the RF component). Since Echostar owns Hughes ipso facto you are wondering the right thing.
Now as to the break -- It would appear you are conceding that you got a break. You've said that it isn't in the best interest of these companies to give a break on upgrades. Two contradictory stances, can you reconcile them? -- Motosat self-pointing dishes: 1.2-meter XF-3 on 93W, .74 meter G74 on 127W, SL-5 HD DirecTV|idirect 3100|Hughes HN7000S|Verizon UMW190 Air Card|1990 Blue Bird Wanderlodge Bus "Blue Thunder"|Author of hnFAP-Alert, PC-OPI and DSSatTool |

 | Frontier told me I be having DSL this fall Hughesnet 4gen by summer.
hmm I like all I can eat cake so I go for fall. |
|
 | i wouldn't rely on frontier's rollout dates. it's been a 18 months since they told me that dsl would be avaliable at my location and they have yet to roll it out to me |

 | reply to dbirdman said by dbirdman:You've said that it isn't in the best interest of these companies to give a break on upgrades. In terms of the cattle stampeding...ViaSat's price plans included higher price per byte (DISH/NRTC got same price for basic with 10 Gigs)...along with with either install or "registration" cost for existing WB users.
Equipment cost was the focus...just like cellphone and DBS companies found out years ago...just break even, or a small profit. When first DBS went up in 90s, they wanted about $1K for equipment as I recall...that failed...so prices dropped, then came the masses, like Charlie did when he started out...Mr Freebie.
My electric coop is different than most...they are not pinching their consumers...no monthly rental cost, but they support equipment/install for 2 years, free.
But, it took $80.00 to switch to Exede 5...
In Hughes case, yes, they want all of those on leased transponders to move to Gen4 since they are paying for those transponders...hence, most likely incentives to move these folks...But move them from Spaceway 3 to Gen4...I really doubt it there will be "freebie" installs. |
|
 | Time will tell all. |
|
 | Shooting Craps Again?
It really depends upon corporate strategy...will they undermine Exede's offering...and will they have any government/corporate contract(s) for bandwidth...I see those as the relevant issues that determines how they roll it out, price wise, and bandwidth wise. |

There are two wildcards in what Hughes will charge:
1. New Sales (customers) - If too slow, prices may drop.
2. Dish Network - A lowered price in a bundled deal....
Hence, if there is a slowdown in new customer installs...watch the prices drop. |

Prolly that may be true, but if they're trying to compete with Exede's new bird, providing a lower speed than 12mbps is like raising a white flag in the battlefield.
Let's wait and see what will be the next step once Gen4 is launched. |

Baldridge said ViaSats early assessment of the EchoStar/Hughes challenge is that ViaSat will be able to compete on price given what he said are Hughes higher monthly subscriber fees.
He also said ViaSat-1 has room to increase the bandwidth offered subscribers beyond the current package of 3 megabits per second uplink and 12 megabits per second downlink.
