New Tiers - The Real Speeds - Check before you updgrade

Since this will just get buried in the other threads, I thought this is a good tidbit to have easy to find by its own thread.

SO we have for the new Quantum tiers ( With Video get the "fluff" )

Advertised Actual

50/25 ---> 58 / 38
75/35 ---> 84 / 40
150/65 ---> 155 / 75

And from one or two reports here, looks like 300/65 -> 315/75

Verizon ALWAYS over delivers!

it's not really "over-delivering" on verizon's part. these speeds are only seen by folks who subscribe to both tv and internet service. the extra "fluff" (as it's commonly referred to) is to give you some wiggle room such that if you have your internet bandwidth pegged to the max, you can still have fluid delivery of your tv service (especially VOD content).

all that being said, the "fluff" rocks.

You're right Guppy. I get 58/39 on my new 50/25 plan

I might be a tad low on reporting the 75/35 tier, I seem to remember getting 42-44 on the upload, but I didn't save any of the speed test images. I only kept the 75/35 for one day and then changed to the 50/25 NO REGRETS!

No they don't. I have the 75/35 plan. I get about 80-85 download on most speed tests - over delivery. Up I seem to be getting between 23 - 27 upload on most speed tests - under delivery. I have a rev D actiontec and the I-211M-D ONT. I have used the optimize tool on this site, but I have never seen upload hit 30.

What does the Verizon Speed Test show?

If you over 10ms to a speedtest server it will under-report on the upload, its due to the small amount of data used as a sample is skewed by the latency, doesn't mean the the line is not performing as provisioned.

I don't have TV service and my upload speed on the 150/35 plan was 65+ from day one.

not always over deliver. My 20/5 service is near or within 20% under the 20/5meg. I never seen it go over.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried the speedtest at verizon.com. this morning. It shows 80.638 Down and 23.586 Up. Speedtest.net is showing similar numbers. Like I said, the download speed is great, the upload speed not so great compared to most others on this forum with the 75/35 package. When I was on 35/35 for the past two years, my upload speeds were always in this range while download was always higher. I remember talking to Verizon support once when I got it, but the tech said the line was provisioned correctly and the contract said "up to 35" and when they pinged my router they said all that stuff was operating correctly, which I believe is still the case. So I guess it will be something I have to live with. Once in a while, I'll see a speedtest return 29+ on an upload. Interestingly, whenever I do a speedtest to a server hosted by communistcast, I get horrible speeds up and down. Thanks again guppy_fish.

Well, your line is provisioned to 38mbs up, so the question now is why is your system under performing, and no its not normal.

I would guess its the PC, common issue beyond running the optimizer is AV software or other add on to the brower are slowing down the stream.

If you give complete details, like OS, PC, network configuration ect, I'm sure you can get the help to get your full provisioned speed

Start by running the Verizon test and post a screen capture of the results

guess i was wrong. wouldn't be the 1st (or 50,000th) time!

we can all agree the fluff is pretty damn sweet, though.

Your close,

75/35 ==> 92/35
150/65 ==> 165/65
300/65 ==> 315/65

^ this is if you have video service.

The upload on the 75/35 is 40+, I had it and speed tested it, I didn't save a screen capture but was seeing about 84/44mbs on the Verizon Speed test. I haven't seen any posts exceeding the 84mb down, you a have a link?

The speed on the 150/65 is well documented here as 155/75:

»Dual 155/75

just got my 75/35 turned on today. i can confirm guppy's numbers. the speedtest.net upstream numbers are right where they were at with my 35/35 package. i never saw any higher than 32-34 then, so i can't complain now. too bad i'm not getting closing to 40 with anything other than verizon's test, but i'll take it. not even sure what i'm gonna do with all this speed. might just fire up 7 or 8 linux distro torrents and sit back and smile.

shmee - you are very close to my location and you get a much better upload number than I do. Here's my numbers to that same server.

Now here is some real fluff on the download speed - 75/35 triple play package

Both of you need to find a better server, 19ms is killing the upload numbers

150/65

Sadly, it looks like most of the speedtest sites cant handle the upload speeds. Almost every one gets over 150 down but this is the only one to break 50 up.

EDIT: Here is the one from Verizon's speedtest site.

I'll post this again.

The Ookla client that speedtest.net uses cannot handle the high upload speeds on FiOS. Verizon is using a newer Ookla client that can correctly measure the high uploads on the new Quantum tiers. Ookla knows they need to get this newer client out to the speedtest.net hosting providers.....

I don't get whats with all the advertized/actual's for.

Not everyone sees those numbers even when bundled.

Just like two posts above me, I get those exact same speeds 24/7. Never 75up like 2-3other people are seeing. Still no response as too why only a few are seeing a higher number.

What do you mean by "fluff"?

fluff is a term used for provisioned bandwidth greater than the listed data rates for the tier.

For example, on the 50/25 , we are actually getting 58/38 , the extra speed is provisioned to allow VOD to not impact internet speed.

Very interesting and educational, when I had 50/20 I wasn't in a bundle, I had all three services but because the speed wasn't offered in a package I didn't have the Triple Play, I wasn't bundle so the speed never reached 50Mbps, it always was 48. Now since the new Triple Play , until I get the 150/65 everything is 78Mbps. Thanks a lot for the information.
