Did I just read that right?!?!? Did nunya just say that sometimes electrical codes (local or otherwise) are done for profit purposes rather than safety concerns... I'm shocked, just shocked!!

The NFPA codes have never been isolated from the influences of industry and the code making panels represent that.

The problem is in the last 20 or so years the industry influence has become very prevailing versus the “safety” DNA of the purpose of the “Code.”

Hmmm..... Whiz had a very different take on that topic in this relatively recent thread...

»Re: Idaho Rejects the Adoption of 2011 NEC

The NEC and its AFCI receptacle requirements are not a law forced upon us by unelected people. The requirements of the NEC can only become a law, when passed by a legislature of elected people. They have the freedom to pass their own amendments - and often do - including removing any portion of the NEC from their local and state laws. This includes the requirements for AFCI protected circuits, and anything that might cost more money, if they so wish. Anyone is free to write to your legislators about this, if you so feel so strongly about it; or even run for office themselves. Lucky for us, when it comes to requirements for electrical wiring; it seems to be one of the few areas where our elected officials are actually looking out for our safety.

Read over the thread... Draw your own conclusion...

getting back to the conduit requirement in illinois, i have to say here in quebec it would almost be a good idea in the sense since we are not allowed to do electrical work it would eliminate the clandestine electricians all over this place

The truth of the matter is very few if any legislative bodies make any changes to the code they either adopt in toto or reject it entirely as such they are in most cases hands off as far as modifying or re-codifying the content goes.

Wizkid is a nice guy but I don’t think he is too heavy on the politics of legislation and how it is produced whereas I have had my hands firmly ensconced on the controls of that sausage maker more than once.

And upon doing a quick search I have discovered his assertion that the “code” is adopted by a legislative body to be quite incorrect as a majority of the states in the US utilize administrative boards to decide to adopt or not adopt a code or standard into the states uniform building codes and regulations.

For example here in Florida that responsibility belongs to the Florida Department of Community Affairs which is headed up by a non-elected panel of appointees.

You're not allowed to use Romex in IL. Everything has to be in conduit. It sucks. Someones family member probably owns a conduit factory.

Not true. It goes by County in IL. I live in Kendall and my house has Romex all through it (built in '07) but anything exposed (basement) has to be in conduit. Interior walls do not need it.

Really now, how many laws have you been part of authoring of and lobbied for the successful passage thereof?

I have three that I can take credit for.

Guess I should have said anywhere I've lived in IL. I didn't know it was allowed in some counties/municipalities. I've unfortunately never lived in one of those.
