Testmy Downloads & HTML5 Internet speed test

In a larger city today, I visited with an owner of computer related business who has a commercial Cox account with 8 mbps down and 3 mbps up.

Testmy showed incorrect download result at 60 mbps on 25 Mbyte payload, but HTML5 Internet speed test, »speedof.me/ showed a score around 8 mbps down. Upload on speedof was way off, but Testmy was around 2 mbps this Saturday late morning.

Conclusion, Testmy download results for those with high speed bandwidth can be invalid on smaller payloads, but Speedof appears to be within expected results; whereas on uploads, Testmy is more accurate, but Speedof can be way off if one gets an incorrect result.

I have found SpeakEasy with similar results as Speedof on downloads.

Exede 5 mbps: WB-1: 163

SpeakEasy: Seattle Server

Upload Speed: 1231 kbps (153.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Speedof: LA Server

Testmy: Dallas Server Upload

Speedof.me was close both ways for me at 2.89 down and 1.22 up. Here is what speedtest.net shows atm.

I am quite sure that speedtest.net is correct because I have checked it exhaustively with actual downloads and uploads and it extremly accurate with DSL. It just hates satellite. The only true way to check a satellite connection is with actual downloads and even then file compression can throw you off a ways, so it is always best to get an average over some smaller downloads than with one big one. Of course this can also be wasting bandwidth so the best advise is if it is working then don't worry about it, or as the saying go's, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I am quite sure that speedtest.net is correct because

HTML5 "is a markup language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web..."

"SpeedOf.Me is a HTML5 Internet speed test," which means one is measuring actual World Wide Web page speeds. Some of Youtube videos (without advertising) are using HTML5 but it must be enabled: See: »www.youtube.com/html5/ And when I come across a HTML5 Video, they will load extremely fast.

Here's a video, but HTML5 must be enabled on your browser

Each speed test is based in some specific format (FLASH, JAVA, UDP, FTP, etc.), but SpeedOf is measuring how fast a web page could be sent to an user.

ISPs with traffic management engaged can affect some speed tests results.

Anybody on WB legacy or Hughes want to give this test a try?

Absolutely useless. I have FF15 which scored 363+9 (out of 500) at »html5test.com/ and MSIE9 which only scored only 138+5. Both browsers returned an absurd speed of ~8Mb/s download. FF16 never once finished the upload test w/o error, and it refused to even start on MSIE9

And in case you forgot, my HughesNet ProPlus was originally a 200/1500 connection. It's since been bumped to 220/2000, but still a helluva far cry from 8 megs

They say, "The HTML5 test score is an indication of how well your browser supports the upcoming HTML5 standard and related specifications," which has nothing to do with a SPEED TEST

Here's the HTML5 Speed Test Site: »speedof.me/

Um, it was to head off the aggravation of you challenging whether or not HTML5 was "enabled" in my browsers. The operative part of my response states the speedof site claimed I had a consistent 8Mb/s download. and no success with the upload test at all

It remains as stated - your speedof.me is absolutely useless for THIS legacy HN user.

Comcast Cable and Exede results seem to differ with Hughes...most interesting.

I'll have to check it out on a 3 mbps WISP later today.

Results from a Wi-Max WISP with 3 mbps download speed.

Test done around 5:30 PM local time, so WISP should not have been loaded.

This WISP delivers on their speed commitment.
