Upgraded to 75/35 and having speed issues

Click for full size
So I have the Actiontec rev F router and 35/35 service in NYC. I upgraded a few days ago to 75/35 but am having some speed issues. First a little background.

I have a Mac, PC, Tivo and PS3 wired to the router and several iPhones, iPads Kindles using wifi. I have coax coming out of my ONT to the router. The wired connection has always been solid but the wifi recently started failing a few months ago for no apparent reasons. I assumed it was interference but really had no clue how to pinpoint the issue. I live in a high-rise but doubt i can get interference from neighbors due to the solid masonry walls and i have no microwave or 2.4 freq devices anywhere near the router.

So i contacted FIOS tech and had a new router shipped. Went from rev C to Rev E but same problem with wifi dropouts. Tried another router and they shipped me the Rev F (which I currently have) but still had wifi dropouts every day. Tried changing the channels to no avail. Finally I switched from 802.11b/g to 802.11n performance mode in the advanced settings and that gave me rock solid wifi again. I do have a few old devices that don't support 802.11n but I am still happy that I have wifi working again.

So on Friday I upgraded to 75/35. Prior to upgrading I would consistently get 42/31 with 8 ms ping on Speedtest.net for my 35/35 service. But when i ran speedtest again this weekend I got much worse results. Download speeds varied from 24-77 mb/s but mainly in high 30s and uploads were consistently averaging 18 or so. The ping latency was always in the 80s ms. I also ran speedtest.net app on my ipad and got 22/17 and 17 ms ping. This is an improvement over the last time i checked the wifi speeds on the ipad earlier this year where i got roughly 14/14.

I don't obsess over speeds and frankly just happy i have working wifi but obviously something is holding my actiontec back.

Any ideas??

You're on a IP address with routing that's dragging you down. First thing I'd try is to get a new IP. Release your address, then shut off the router for two hours. Power up again and see if you get a new address. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »How do I release my DHCP lease

If you get the same address or the same results, do it again, maybe overnight.

I had this right after the upgrade. Changing my IP resolved it, was screwed up routing on my IP, was sending me off to a router in Kentucky to go to NYC LOL

thanks - so i should release the lease within the router settings and then immediately power off the router for 2 hours or overnight?

yes, OR you can release, clone your PC's mac address to your router and then reboot the router.

Different mac should get you a new IP right away rather than having to wait, not sure if the actiontec lets you clone though.

This doesn't usually get a new IP ( change mac address ), or has been my experience. Power down for 2+ hours does

MAC address change should almost always get a new IP address unless you're really unlucky. The DHCP server assigns IPs based on the MAC, so your previous lease would've had to expire and the IP go back into the general pool. Then the DHCP server would have to pick that IP for your new address.. possible, but unlikely.

FWIW, I tried cloning my old router's MAC address to get the same IP address on a new router last week. After hitting "release", the router was offline for around 10 minutes. Within that 10 minutes, my old IP was reassigned to somebody else.

This is what I typically see. I just need to release the IP for a few seconds to at most ten minutes and I will always get a new IP address. Sometimes it only takes a few seconds and a new IP address will be assigned to me.

Thanks for everyone's help. I released and powered off overnight and now have new IP address and excellent results. Ping is back to 8ms and wired speeds of 84/34.

Couple of questions though:

1) Is there anything I can do to optimize my router? Can I improve on the 34 mb/s upload? (I realize i am getting exactly what VZ is offering but thought I would ask anyways)

2) My wifi speeds are roughly 20/20 when near the router but fall off quite a bit when i move my iPad to other areas of my 1000 sq ft apartment. My AT rev. F is set to 802.11n performance mode because the original setting 802.11b/g was causing dropouts. How can I increase my speed and range? I do have a wired ethernet connection from the AT to a D-Link ethernet switch in my living room so I can wire my PS3 and Tivo. So i have a few extra ports in an area in my apt where I have a weaker wifi signal. Should I hook up a $40 Trendnet Wireless N Upgrader to the ethernet switch? Or will the new Actiontec router provide faster better wifi. Finally, what is the best speed I can expect from wifi with my setup?
