Two issues IMHO.
1) If my modem were to fail -- I have a spare. I could be back online quickly.

2) My parents got annoyed at AT&T. I was able to do a self install of a modem... and have them up on charter.

So you bought two D3 modems? That seems like a waste.

Likely... but ... at the time I had both Knology and Charter cable.
Ah -- fault tolerant redundant internet connections.
