Same issue here in Centerton, AR. So the issue appears to at least be happening in all of NWA. Usually around 50-60 on the speed test, struggling to get 1-2. Ill give it a day or two.

Well heat does cause issue's, but if this is a problem that continues to happen. Contact cox until something is done about it. When speeds drop, if I was you i would run some traceroutes, and such to make sure its not routing going bad somewhere. But as summer comes, more kids, and such at home. So bandwidth could always be a problem. Something I would discuss with maybe CoxTech1 See Profile if I was you, to see if he sees anything problematic.

will a attenuator drop the downstream signal?
With out changing the upstream.

Not likely. The modem will have to power adjust to get the signal through the attenuator so that the CMTS still 'sees' the same level.
