[Cable] Throttling/Speed issues in Quebec?

A friend of mine got a fast server to avoid throttling on some ISP we don't seem to have around here. Anyway he let me on so I could check it out and see what the fuss is all about. I tried the FTP connection to test how it's like to be on the receiving end of a dedicated 100mbits upload speed... I can barely get 200k/sec tonight while I could get decent speeds yesterday.

I found a few links with google to test my FTP speed in general and while I can't get past this speed he always go in the 1000-2000k/sec range.

There's plenty of juice left at the moment on that source. Speedtests gives me my full 30mbps/2mbp right now.

Tracert is all fine. Got a 100 ping on that source in France.

Or is there an issue with Teksavvy right now?

Edit : Scratch that, I can't get a better speedtest than 10mbps now. I'm on the Videotron network and that's the ISP I was with for 2 years at this address and we usuaully never get congestion in my small city. Even Videotron's own speedtest won't give me more than 10mbps. My upstream doesn't seem to be affected. Seem to get my 2mbps fine.

Look like there is something wrong... I'm supposed to be at 30 Mbps. Only a 1/3 right now @ St-Jerome, QC

So it's not only you.

I'm also on the Videotron network and I'm having the same issue. This is really annoying since the speed seems to be varying between ~4mbps and ~10mbps.

seems to be ok now...

also, which provider is the France server, I have a feeling it is due to their peer to canada is not strong(which is very normal especially to one of their largest data-center there).

I just woke up and I can get my full 30mbps on speed tests. I'm now getting 1800k/sec by FTP which is a lot better than yesterday.

As for the provider in France, I'm not sure. One thing for certain, it's either some new throttling or there was an issue yesterday.

I know when I had my server with OVH, I was using Filezilla as a server & client. Only way that I was able to maxout my connection was to use multiple connections. On a single connection, I'd never max out more then 200KB/sec.

Re: [Cable] Throttling/Speed issues in Quebec?

It may be OVH. I asked my friend about it to make sure but he's not at his desk right now.

I juste checked remotely on my home computer to do another little test. Using Filezilla, I can't seem to get more than 1.6-1.8mb but if I start two transfers, I can almost get my full 30mbps speed.

My 2 files/transfers are going at 1.7mb/sec and 1.6mb/sec.

There was definitively something strange going on yesterday night. Everything was slow. Martin, have you heard anything about it from Videotron or otherwise? From this thread it seems I wasn't alone.

It is indeed OVH.

Why would my friend with Videotron who's living 5 mins from myself would always max his 30mbps while I'm on Teksavvy (on Videotron too) and receive bad speed?

I'm just asking because my high speed from this morning are gone. My speedtest are still rock solid at 30mbps/2mbps but my FTP speed from that server on OVH can't go above 300-500k/sec right now.

What is different beside the routing by being on Teksavvy?

It could be the routing in itself. You could provide a trace to the server. If you want to keep the IP private, then simply blank it out but provide the rest.

My speedtest right now :

It's slow again tonight... Here is 3 speed test I did, the first one was at 7:22pm, 8:18pm and 9:35pm:

At that speed I can't watch TV! Look like congestion during the evening like we had on cable before TSI Upgraded their link.

Here is a traceroute to google:

It's strange because congestion is something I never encountered since Videotron started the cable service in my city. I've been with Videotron since the year 2000. Since 2005 by myself in different appartments and I never got any slowdowns unless there was a specific issue that needed fixing.

Can't say I like it a lot so far... I find it strange I would get congestion/slowdowns on the same network just by switching to Teksavvy.

I'm having the exact same issue as Fredtek here. (About the same speeds on the same schedule). I'm located in Quebec City.

It happened 2 nights in a row now (25th and 26th) very annoying...

Everything is back to normal again this morning. I swear it looks like throttling behavior. I can also max my 30mbps with 2 transfers from the OVH provided FTP.

Martin, should we all start a thread in the direct support or you have enough with the people from this thread to look up what's happening?

Teksavvy had the same issue a while back with the Videotron network, they had to upgrade their capacity between them and Videotron... it's likely the same issue.

Thanks for looking into this, I will be keeping track of this thread as i was planning on switching to TS in august as my Videotron Business account expires, now i'm not so sure...

Maybe Ebox would be better

That's why I kept this thread instead of going directly to the Direct Support because I hate when a thread just dies before I can see an answer to something I'm interesting in getting some answers and that thread is exactly what I was searching.

I found old threads and it could be a similar situation?

This must be what kovy what talking about. There was also a Stop Sell for the whole province of Quebec around that time.

Yes that's it... if alot of people are complaining about slow speed in the evening (where most people use internet), it sounds exactly like it. Also, Videotron forum doesn't seem to have any complaints about speed problem.

The first and second screenshots were taken at 8:50pm and 9:10pm. The last one was taken today at 5:10pm

I'm in Quebec City. I get download speed slowdowns between 7pm and 10pm. I have the 15/1.5 package and the download speed can slow down to 5 mbps. My ping stays the same though, between 20-30 ms.

This is my first month with Teksavvy Cable and this is deceiving. The timeframe at which occurs the slowdowns is when we need the speed payed for the most.

Hope they'll answer us and do something about it.

Little tip, click on "Partager ce Résultat" and you'll get the option to get the link in Forum format that you can paste here and it'll give you a nice window like some of us posted here. It's easier for you and will look nicer to boot!

A little update for this evening :

27 juin 2012 - 17h42

27 juin 2012 - 18h41

27 juin 2012 - 19h57

27 juin 2012 - 20h42

It would be nice at this point to get some kind of answers from Teksavvy.

Still no words from anyone about this.

I spent two hours trying to get an answer with phone support and I basically spent the whole time trying to prove to them it wasn't a computer issue. (The support tech was very nice and professionnal)

Here's what I got from my call:
Teksavvy thinks it's an issue with Videotron's network.

Videotron thinks it's an issue with my comptuer.

From what I've read on this thread, looks like it's a congestion problem coming from Teksavvy.

We've got a really nice circle of people blaming each other there, and I have no idea what I can do to get this solved. It may come to the point that the only thing to do will be to switch to another ISP.

Anyway, here's the latest test results:

June 27th 6:15pm

June 27th 9:15pm

It's not just the speed. Facebook main page just took 42 seconds to load. Heck, the speed tests sits on the flashing CONNECTING after the ping for 8-9 seconds before starting to actually download where it's instant usually.

Just asked my friend on Videotron (living 5 mins away from me) to do some tests. He's maxing his 30mbps on the speedtest, OVH server in France and on random fast websites.

As for myself...
