| reply to Nezmo said by Nezmo: And I still personally think that working for an establishment for lower pay because you have been 'brainwashed' in to thinking it's a great place is an unfortunate choice - if it's that great show me with compensation over and above the 'prestige' of being able to say I work in an Apple store.
You say you understand business but insist that Apple should pay more only because they make a lot of money or it's a great place to work, neither of which is a good business reason to do so. Another point is, a great place to work doesn't always translate into higher pay. If you enjoy your work, pay rate might be #1 on your list of important things. For example, my son is considering two job offers. One pays significantly more than the other but the lower paying job would, by far, be more interesting and fun. |

I'm sure they exist, I just don't remember seeing one at the the two stores I frequent. I was thinking the other day that it was surprising that Apple hasn't been hit with a age discrimination lawsuit yet. Probably for the same reason my restaurants haven't. No one in their 40s or higher applies. |

Usually these people were older than I was, but people younger sought me out. Perhaps it was a perceived notion that I knew more or had better people skills (or both). |

They seem to think anyone over thirty is ancient, and couldn't possibly know what the fuck they were talking about. Which is funny because that's the exact same thing I was thinking about them, and their age group. -- "Oh Look A Dead Horse ... Let's Beat It To Death!" |

Best Buy is 4x as large, if not more, and MAY have 50 people on the floor working with people. I think that is going to cut into an individuals pay.

Re: Apple's Retail Army, Long on Loyalty but Short on Pay I met a gentlemen almost a year ago who (at the time) worked at an Apple Retail Store in Connecticut as a "Genius". He had a B.S. in Computer Science from a reputable university and Apple was paying him either $18 or $18.50/hr. I don't remember which.
All I could think about as he was telling me this was "and you have a computer science degree... what the hell are you thinking?!"
Granted, I have absolutely no idea how long he'd been at Apple, or how long he'd been working the Genius position, but he'd been out of school for a good 3 or 4 years at that point in time. -- QUAD!!!! |

Well..anyway...I needed to go to the Genius on Thursday, cracked screen on Nano...no breaks, $65 to fix (well, replace)...hands me device, sign the iPad.."Okay, we're through"...somehow I gave her a break and ask "you send a bill in the mail?" and she's like "oh...yeah, right, I forgot..." hmmm.. iPad crashed twice in 5 minutes..(crappy software)..
Next I needed to buy some stuff. Look at something fancy (accessory) and I asked how much ($29) then he said "no...no...this is wrong and pulled another sticker which revealed real price...$79..." Anyway, can't say I met anyone smarter than me in that store, which doesn't say a hell of a lot..... -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

| reply to Gbcue said by Gbcue:said by genxr:said by Mike:Apple Retail is a shit hole. Compared to what? Gap? Best Buy? I don't work retail, but I would prefer working at Apple than any other retailer I can think of. And the demand for Apple's products is astronomical. I don't know how much selling is actually going on. They're more just fetching product and ringing people up. If I had to work in retail, I'd go straight to Costco. My buddy was working at Costco, around $26/hour when he left, back in 2002 or 2003. Good money for shipping/receiving. -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |
