Sounds like a good idea. My Ubuntu box phones home daily for updates, and I quite like it.

My Windows boxes phone home daily for updates as well. It's a good thing.

Doesn't Windows only do security updates once a month?

Getting people to stop using windows is more or less the same as trying to get people to stop smoking tobacco products. They dont want to change; they are happy with slowly dying inside. -- munky99999

Depends on the severity of the issue being patched.

Microsoft usually issues security updates once a month, but my boxes still check every day. Maybe it's overkill, but on the other hand, it doesn't hurt anything.

Usually when they issue critical updates they do so on a Tuesday. It is not uncommon to get more than one set of updates a month, on on consecutive weeks.

Today there were none for my Windows 7 64 bit box.
