High internet speed, pretty good ping, but can't play COD?

I just bought a 3.0 modem and a N600 router from cox.
My speed went from 20mps to 32mps.
My ping is around 50. I live in San Diego.
Every game is either a two bar or a one bar, and I am lagging all over the place.

That is a tracert to google.com.
Sometimes my ping is higher.
But right not I have 24 ping, and 30 speed.
I still can't do any online gaming.

As far as gaming goes, rather than general network issues, you need to get a tracert/ping to the actual server the game is on to see if there's a problem on your (Cox's) end, somewhere in the middle, or on their end. They should have some sort of documentation on how to check that in their support forums or whatever.

But, your ping times are all over the map on each of those hops. What are you modem's signals like?

Seeing as how high the ping jumped on the second hop, maybe try without the router. Because the spike happens on next hop after router. Which could point to a problem with the router. So I suggest testing without the router.

It probably will be better hooked strait to the Modem.
I actually have a Netgear n300 wireless router wnr2000v3.
With maybe 2 other people on the network on average.
Would it be the router has a problem or not enough bandwidth?
If it was the router, would upgrading it to say a N600 make a difference?
I used to have my own Modem, my connection was perfect.
but it was costing to much

Well if anyone in your home is using bandwidth near your max speed, either in download speed or upload speed. It will affect your connection, and ping times. So if this is a problem, you may need to setup QOS(Quality Of Service) in your router giving bandwidth priority to your gaming system. Also make sure your Router's firmware is up to date.

Thanks for the reply.
It is two other people on wireless lap tops, I live in a normal house.
I have preferred internet.
I set up the QOS and upgraded the firmware.
Still can't play a simple game.
They told me it was the Modem, upgraded that.
Then they told me it was the router, upgraded that.
I am at the end of the rope.
I still have a week to get my money back.

Well the modem wasn't a bad investment, you just need to figure out whats causing your lag issue's. Like I said in my earlier post, I suggest connecting directly to the modem for a bit, and make sure the router isn't the possible source of the problem. If the problem continues even after being direct connected to the modem. I would then say its time to maybe send CoxTech1 See Profile a PM on here, with your modem's mac address, and see what he can find out for you looking at things from his end. Also if you direct connect to the modem, run some traceroutes if possible.

For starters, I would try a direct connection to the current modem to see if you still have problems or not. This would eliminate a few variables. I also see you mentioned QoS on the router. Some people have had better luck disabling that.

That is wired direct to the modem.
Yes, it is better.
But I can't leave it like that. I live with other people.
Does the router have a problem? I just bought it last week.
Or is preferred just for one guy in his Grandma's basement?

1. Ping metrics aside, can you play the game with the router out of the loop? You mentioned several times that you could not play any online games.

2. Gaming is not bandwidth intensive and Preferred offers enough bandwidth for more than Grandpa ... within reason. If your roommates are saturating the connection by, for example, downloading heavily or uploading via a torrent client without setting the throttle to a decent level they could easily be clogging the pipe.

3. QoS on consumer routers is hit or miss.

Well, at least we know going directly to the modem things are fine.

My next step would be to re-attach the router using a wired connection with you being the only person physically connected to and using the router.

If things are back to being bad then it's something with the router or perhaps a bad network cable. You can rule out the network cables by connecting each one between your PC and the modem since we know that configuration works.

At this stage it's going back to the original configuration 1 step at a time to determine the cause.

QOS was off to start, it did nothing one way or the other.
I am sure my room mates do down load stuff, but they don't have a account, so it is slow and not 24/7.
This is the thing, you call Cox, they send out a tech.
He starts blaming it on stuff, Modems, routers, splitters, ect.
You spend a wad of cash and time, taking all that out of the mix and it still don't work.
I can't even play playstation that has been out for 6 years. It is not a computer you just hook it up and play.
Is all I can do with my internet is watch Youtube, and look at web pages.
I could go wireless and piggy back off the guy next store and get the same service.

You're speaking in generalities when specifics are needed.

What is slow and not 24/7?

What are they downloading? How much? Are they running torrent clients? If so, are they configured to restrict the uploads?

What still "don't" work? Can you connect to the desired game servers? Do you get disconnected? Or does "don't" work mean unacceptable game play?

How are the game consoles connecting to the router? If wireless, what's the WiFi landscape in your area look like? Crowded? Good signal? Good SNR?

Well looking at your results, something regarding that router is the cause of your problem. Either the router has issue's, or bandwidth is being saturated by someone in your house using the router. Also make sure your using security for your wireless, I suggest WPA2, and a good security password. You should already know this, but just worth mentioning imo.

The diagnostics you've done so far seem to suggest that the problem is within your residence. If removing the router improves things it's time to determine why that is the case. Are you using a wired or wireless connection? How much distance is between the router and your device if using wireless? G or N? Obstructions, etc.
