Re: Xfinity with TiVo Premiere XL4

After deciding not to wait for the new X1 platform to be released, I picked up a Tivo XL-4 on Sunday and a cablecard on Monday. Set everything up Monday night and all went smooth. It took the Tivo about 1.5 hrs to update everything via the internet. Called the dedicated Comcast Cablecard activation line and after being on hole for about 10 minutes everything went well. It ended up taking about the whole 1.5 hrs for the Cablecard to start showing channels but it seems to be working well too. The Xfinity onDemand Icon did not appear at first but after doing a forced connection fto the Tivo servers to update again and leaving it for the night, it was available and working this morning. Picture quality looks better than the older Comcast Motorola box and the on screen guide is MUCH better, showing lots more info and for about 2 weeks into the future. So far, so good!

Does anyone know of a Tivo remote control short cut that will take you directly to the "To Do List" without having to go through a couple different menus?

The article in the Boston Globe leaves out the main advantage to the Premiere XL-4 in that it allows you to record 4 shows at once, which is a big advantage to anyone who has juggled what shows to record and when. The thing is just so expensive $350+ on most websites, it's really too bad that it wasn't a little less expensive.

Looks like you may have just got your wish - there is an item on the Zatz Not Funny blog site today about TiVo getting ready to release a new "Premiere 4" (no "XL") model that has 4 tuners like the XL4, but only a 500GB hard drive (like the "Premiere 2" two-tuner model), and that is rumored to be priced at only $250:

Yes, the old "Premiere Elite" model was renamed the "Premiere XL4" (»support.tivo.com/app/answers/det···_id/2295).

This new "Premiere 4" (without the "XL" suffix) model has 4 tuners like the XL4, but only 500GB of recording capacity (vs. 2TB), so it can sell for the reduced price of $250 (vs. $400) for those people who mostly just timeshift and don't save many programs long-term on their DVRs.

EDIT: Looking at the specs comparision page on the Premiere models -»www.tivo.com/products/tivo-premi···ecs.html - the "Premiere 4" also cuts costs by coming with only a "standard remote" (vs. a "Glo Premium backlit remote") and not being "THX Certified" (and supplied with "THX optimizer glasses") like the XL4.

Does anyone know how to get the Tivo guide to stop having "To Be Announced" on several channels? Most channels are fine and have all the program information but there are a few that always say "To Be Announced". Some of these channels have all the information on their SD channel # but the HD # version of it will say "To Be Announced" and vice versa. I've only had the Tivo for about a month and I thought at first the program information would load in over time, but it never has.

That's a guide issue that you have to report to Tivo, they will then follow up with Tribune to get it corrected.

You could also rerun guided setup with a different zip code in your area to refresh everything, sometimes that works.

If you rerun a guided setup again, would that cancel out all of the Season Pass's and any other programs in the "To Do"List?

No as long as it's the same lineup, but if it's channels you don't care about that much just open up a ticket with Tivo.

I opened a ticket with Tivo, they responded back saying that the issue had been resolved but it may take 24 - 48 hrs for the changes to appear in the guide. As of now, the guide is the same as it has been, but we will check back frequently to see if anything doea get fixed.

As the comments on that page indicated, finishing the HDUI is way overdue. But given that it took 2 years to fix some of the HDUI slowness issues, this is pretty quick for them.

Tivo badly needs some real competition in the third-party DVR space, but they use their patents as a weapon to keep everyone else out. The result is software and hardware that, while far superior to what cable offers, is still nowhere near as good as it could be.
