[Equipment] voip-friendly home "routers"?

Anyone know of a list of the good/bad/ugly reference for which of the cheap (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc.) home routers will play nicely with voip? Being able to adjust max udp state timeout and similar is a plus, and being able to turn off sip/rtp "helpers" is another plus.

Assume the provider proxies RTP...

Thanks!

I haven't found a router I like better than one with Tomato firmware on it. You can adjust all the timeouts to your specifications and disable the "helpers".

I've heard good things about the Netgear WNDR3700 but have never actually tested one.

I've had enough problems with a few select models of D-Link routers that now I just avoid anything made by D-Link on principle.

I have a Linksys WRT 320N amd haven't had one single problem, so I guess it might be classified as one of the "safe" ones.

I've got the Netgear WNDR3700 V1 router. It is a work horse with a PBX, 3 HTPCs, a Silicondust HomeRun unit with 3 tuners, 6 WiFi SIP phones, 7 WiFi PC's and a 1 TB media server attached. Doesn't skip a beat. You can get these on e-bay refurbished for not a lot of money. Get the V1 or V2 though.

I've got a WNDR4500 as well, it's a backup. It screams as well, but is sitting in stand-by, already configured.

Need any more info, let me know.

I've had good luck with a D-Link DIR-601 for my modest needs. The UDP timeout is spec'd (and measured) at a fixed 300 seconds. Calls have been fine in the midst of FTP transfers so I'm leaving well enough alone.

WRT54GL running Tomato works just fine ATAs and softphones. I'm going to test how everything works with my RT-N66U running stock firmware sometime in the next week or so.

With multiple sip devices on the lan side "helpers" are needed. DDWRT-voip does this nicely.

Not necessarily. I have three SIP devices behind a Tomato router right now, with SIP Helper disabled.

Can all of them receive calls?
Helper is not a good term, ddWRT optionally includes a full sip router.

Yes, all of them can indeed receive calls.

I have setups with dozens of phones working fine behind a Tomato router, with the SIP helper on. There is no port forwarding in place at all.

All the phones work reliably and never miss incoming invites, or do they ever experience audio issues.

I do have each phone set to use a unique SIP port and RTP range, however, as the Tomato SIP helper does seem to get confused occasionally otherwise.

Same here. Running plain vanilla Tomato with an ATA and multiple computers with softphones. all of the can make and receive calls without issue.
