djrobx posted : DirecTV uses a tweaked version of MoCA called DECA. They have special "green dot" splitters that have been modified to have lower isolation. People who have swapped the splitters out usually show pretty significant increases of PHY rates vs. normal splitters.

I couldn't get much over 200, but after switching to a DECA optimized splitter, my PHY rates are all above 240.

They also have devices that can block the DECA signal at the splitter for legs that won't be participating on the network. Experimenting with the positioning of those made a big difference as well. In general I've found there's a lot of trial and error involved in improving PHY rates and sometimes things that are supposed to make it better actually make it worse. Even shortening or lengthening a piece of coax can change things dramatically (due to wavelengths of signal that "reflects" back down the wire).
--
AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011
Rethink Billable.

bradenmcg posted : One of them usually shows around 215 Mbps, the other 230-ish (this is both from the perspective of the 3rd box, I have 2 DVRs and one view-only box). Looks like MoCA 1.1 is rated for 270, what do people get in actual situations?

Splitter the tech provided was actually an Antronix, so there's that higher port isolation...

bradenmcg posted : I was just wondering if maybe one of the "HomePNA-ready" splitters from Holland (the GHPNA-* line) would be better. They apparently have lowered port isolation, and they are rated up to 1500mhz unlike normal CATV splitters. I'm not sure why they mention HomePNA, because HPNA runs over cable modem return frequencies (which most normal splitters will pass fine). The extended headroom on the top end would imply that it's also good for MoCA...

The other thing I thought of was a Satellite-focused splitter -- DTV SWIM splitters are now rated for 5MHz-2GHz. Even if the isolation spec isn't better, surely having the thing tested and rated for higher frequencies shouldn't hurt?

Theoretically, the isolation doesn't matter as much, no? I thought the point of the MoCA "blocker" that they put on the main drop was not only to keep leakage off the tap, but also to actively reflect the MoCA bands back into the home, helping to overcome the isolation on normal splitters?

Just wondering if there are "better" splitters available that are rated for the MoCA bands, and perhaps have lower loss between the ports? Or should I just leave it the hell alone? :D

What Drew said. I would leave it alone. The irony is that higher quality splitters such as Antronix have a higher port isolation (40dB) which makes them not so ideal for MoCA.
