as in if one is damaged does a city have to wait or can the city DOT commence their own repairs with say cold patch.

I guess in winter there is the endless issue of the plows piling huge mounds of snow into the right of ways too. I know the city plows where I grew up where hammer down and you could see a huge tidal wave of snow in their wake. once saw the RR tracks with a 2ft high pile of ice snow across them.

THough i would imagine even a frozen solid plow garbage pile cannot stop something as heavy as a train.

Is it a quiet zone, or near a quiet zone?

Without going into much detail, Yes, there are morons, but those morons sometimes take other people with them, like children.

No matter how much logic you put into it, the crew is going to wonder if they should have done something different...

Should have taken a dump before leaving the terminal, should have waited for that last signal to improve a little, etc...

Should have, could have, would have...

We don't like taking lives. Period.

Calling the police is ridiculous. The local police have zero authority over the railroads.

I am always amazed with the number of 'accidents' that trains have with cars or people.

walk down the track a little way and see if there is a "W" sign posted next to the track...

When I'm traversing a quiet zone, annoying you is the least of my concerns.

It is my whistle, and it is the only thing I have to warn people of my approach. On the list of things, not blowing through a quiet zone is last on my list of priorities.

I am not familiar with that particular crossing or the rules involved, and I would suspect most on here aren't either.

Maybe you could use their horns! CSX doesn't seem to care and it keeps telling us the engineers it's can still blow their horns if they see a need even in a quiet zone.

I'm being perfectly serious.

Show trains running a crossing with no safety equipment and not using the Whistles.

I am 99% certain from the previous description that this is what's known as a "private" crossing and horn / bell isn't required. These crossing are usually only protected by a set of cross bucks and a stop sign.

Sadly, I know one thing that would force CSX to make a change. I think most people can guess what that is too...

This isn't a certainty, but one of my wife's uncles is a train engineer and it seemed to me that he "drove" the same route pretty routinely, so he is familiar with the track (curves, crossings, etc). I suspect most trains operate similarly.
