You can see it where a boundry is the middle of a street, i.e. one side is "City A" and the other side is "County B". Snow plows will plow "their" side only. Even if they have to drive back down the other side, they'll raise the plow !!

Same thing is going to occur with RR crossings. Haven't you even encountered those crossings where you can't drive more than 3 mph because the asphalt has caved in or is all lumpy ? I suspect in many cases, the RR simply isn't aware of the problem. You'd think if a citizen complained to the city, they'd forward it to the RR, but that might be asking a lot of some... ;)

Thing is I am a large person, on a steel electric bike with 40lbs of batteries traveling faster than they might think (Also always wear a helmet, they never), I hit them broadside they are going down if even I have slowed to just bump them.

Again the bigger mass always wins even if emergency slowed greatly, especially perpendicularly, not head on as most train collisions are.

And yes oddly enough cars can break down on tracks on rare occasions, but you see a train coming (and why wouldn't you be looking at that point) you get your ass out and let your new Prius or whatever become scrap metal.

And I probably drove some engineers nuts as a kid putting pennies on the track when near and heard them coming....

But it was never close (even in the late 50's a penny or the opportunity to squash it wasn't worth that much) it was a low speed commuter spur... though I do seem to remember hearing of a kid killed, but again just being truly stupid.

Not the train or engineer's fault. I certainly as a kid was warned about them, respected it, and always give them a wide birth.

Not to say I have never run a crossing, but only when it was a too long train sitting on the crossing switch, but going nowhere.

And technology has greatly improved things, switching, control and safety, but I'm still never going to teasingly bull fight one ;)

--

We live quite near a crossing with gates and lights that is supposed to be the first crossing of a quiet zone yet about 50% of the trains (we have many of them) still blow their horns. Maybe you could use their horns! CSX doesn't seem to care and it keeps telling us the engineers it's can still blow their horns if they see a need even in a quiet zone.

thegeek posted : I grew up on a farm 20 miles from town. Every time we went to town we would cross 2 sets of tracks. Every time my mom would ask all us kids, "Any choochoos?" It makes them aware of the danger at an early age. I even say it in my head every time I approach a crossing when by myself. It's a good habit to get into.
