Burning smell in air conditioning

The 92 Dakota I'm driving has a burning smell coming from the vents, but only after the blower has been on for a couple of minutes. It smells like wood burning to me. The truck is parked under trees but I've tried to keep the leaves from piling up on it, and it is driven nearly every day so it usually doesn't get much piled up on it.

I've dug under the dash on the passenger side, assuming there's something stuck in the blower area that's heating up (and I dug in that area because that's where the blower is on a 95/96 Ram lol). So far I've not been able to get anything pulled off, chances are there are bolts I can't get to.

As much as I didn't want to, I attempted pulling the dash. I pulled all the bolts off the top and it's loose. Checked on the sides and underneath and don't see any more bolts to pull. It appears the paneling around the door frame may be preventing the dash from falling forward. Sadly to pull those panels it appears I'm going to have to unbolt the seat belt pulley up top.

Before I go randomly unbolting things (like I have been lol), does anyone have any diagrams to pull the dash or maybe disassembly of the AC system?

Heater box/blower housing is likely holding leaves and/or there are leaves on the blower speed resistor pack in the blower housing as it gets very hot when lower speeds are used.

Yeah that's what I figured. Anyone have a disassembly guide for the AC system and/or dash?

Not familiar with the truck but I'm pretty sure its like most other cars and the area you need to get to is under the cowl on the inlet side and not on the inside.

If it really is leaves causing it I would definitely install some type of screen or deflector because that is one cause of car fires.

Interesting. I found directions for removing/replacing the blower motor: »wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_re···2_Dakota. I didn't think about the inlet to it. A screen would be ideal. Is that the same area where the wiper linkage is or are we talking under the hood? And yeah we haven't used the blower at all since my GF first noticed it. The last thing we want is a fire.

Well I attempted the directions I found on the other site. Sadly it fails to mention there are two screws run backwards into a white plastic support brace that runs the length of the dash. I can get all of the other screws out but those two. I could get one out with a stubby phillips but I wouldn't have a chance with the other. Looks like it's intended to pull the glove compartment with the dash off.

Failing that I pulled the cowl open and blew/vacuumed out the leaves and debris from in there. My dad then gave me the idea of blowing through one of the inside vents to try and push the debris back through. Considering my compressor is only a 3 gallon one, it doesn't have much capacity behind it so we used the leaf blower lol.

After that I turned it on and no more burning smell so something worked. Finally, I spotted the intake opening in the cowl. I dug out some fine mesh metal window screen and cut it to size and put it in the opening. It doesn't suck it in but it does have some decent suction to it so it's no wonder it got debris in there. Hopefully this problem is fully resolved now *crosses fingers AND knocks on wood* lol.

Good to hear. Hopefully you have solved the problem.
