On the radio they were discussing how Canada Days is officially a holiday in only 8 provinces. Quebec doesn't recognize Canada Day and Newfoundland & Labrador celebrate it as Memorial Day...
I was a bit shocked to hear this... |

I was a bit shocked to hear this... NL has only been apart of Canada for like 50 years. PQ is technically a nation within a nation now. |

I was a bit shocked to hear this... Newfoundland has been celebrating Memorial Day on July 1 since before they joined Canada. It is celebrated in remembrance of the Newfoundland Regiment's losses at Beaumont-Hamel on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916. |

I have never been to Quebec, and I guess my feelings are based on the assumption that majority of Quebeckers dislike the rest of Canada for not knowing much about Quebec culture etc. I tell you... when I was younger and had french classes, it was pretty much sitting down watching Telefrancais and that evil looking homeless clown dude.. I forget the show name.

As for Quebec. My experience in Quebec (mostly Montreal and QC) is different that what I see on the news. I was in Quebec a long time ago (98). In the cities most people seemed ok with being part of Canada. Everyone I ran into was way more bilingual than I am. I had a pretty good time.
I think the politicians ruin it for Quebec. The separatists want Quebec to be its own country, but they still want the benefits of being part of Canada (aka the gobbing piles of cash they receive from the rest of Canada). I think its hard to stomach that they want both.
I don't think the majority of Quebec citizens want to separate. I think the younger folk are less likely to want it than the older folk. If it was about 50/50 in the 90's, it must be less by now. |

Totally irritates me! lol I really despise the bigotry that so many people in Canada show towards Quebec and Quebeckers. Not to fan the flames, but don't you think the rest of Canada might be a little less prejudice toward QC if they tried to be just a little bit more like the rest of Canada? I think the feelings toward QC are there because the general trend within QC is to try to distance themselves from the rest of us - thus an innate resentment.
Think of it like a family - parents, and children... now one of the siblings decides they don't want anything to do with the siblings, they are going to make the siblings write in a different language if they want to communicate with them, they keep telling their siblings "we wish we weren't in your family!", and they keep asking the parents for more money and keep getting it, even though they won't place nice with the siblings.... How do you think the siblings in that family would feel toward that "lone wolf" sibling.
I'm not saying all that stuff is 100% accurate - but it's the appearance and optics the rest of Canada sees and feels from what I have observed in my corner of "the rest of Canada".
(Mind you, I love tourists from QC.... those ppl willing to leave and come see the rest of us - great guests - love having them - feel free any time to leave la belle province and see the rest of us!!) |

Likewise, if my adopted brother went around always wearing a T-shirt that said "Je me souviens" that might cause some friction. The implication would be that he preferred to not be in our family.
Understandable perhaps, but it works both ways. |

GuspazGuspazPremium,MVM join:2001-11-05 Montreal, QC kudos:20 | reply to vue666 Quebec has, in many ways, a significantly different culture and even legal system from the rest of Canada, so it's only natural that Quebec isn't a mirror image of the rest of Canada. The language barrier also creates a great deal of insulation in terms of pop culture. Even having been born and lived my entire life in Quebec and being fully bilingual, I'm largely ignorant of most francophone Quebec celebrities, artists, performers, etc. I presume that it's even worse for the rest of Canada.
I suspect, actually, that Quebecers are probably more aware and in tune with Canadian pop culture than the rest of Canada is aware of Quebec pop culture. Quebec is more a part of the rest of Canada than the rest of Canada is a part of Quebec. Although I often suspect that we here in Quebec are much more familiar with American pop culture than rest-of-Canada.
To use your family analogy, think of it like a young family adopting a 17-year-old, who is almost an adult, by kidnapping him at gunpoint, who has a different religion, values, and language, and then most of the family refuses to even learn how to communicate with their newly kidnapped son. Is it any surprise that the son would feel a bit isolated? -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |
