Can't type in Actiontec password fast

I noticed that whenever I try to type in the password to log in to the web UI of the Actiontec, if I type the password in fast, it will not accept it, I have to type it very slowly. And I know there's no way I'm getting it wrong each and every time I type it in. Does anyone know why this is? Same thing happens on Mac and Windows PCs, and the same happens to me in other people's networks with the Actiontecs. It's a little annoying, because I have to type the password in slowly every time I want to log into it, and typing the password fast too many times results in me getting locked out of the Web UI until I reboot the router.

I have never, ever experienced that. You aren't confusing the Actiontec's stupid security feature of displaying extra bullets with not accepting the password are you? If so, just ignore them.

I now use a password manager to type the name and password for the Actiontec, that thing sends the input to the page way, way faster than anybody possibly could from a keyboard, including the Enter key, and the Actiontec accepts the password every time.

Other than the extra bullets displayed for the password, I have no clue what your problem is, but my Actiontec has always accepted the password as fast or as slow as I wanted to type it.

Yeah, I always ignored the bullets because they're distracting when trying to type in the password. It's weird, it says Login Failed any time I try to type the password in fast, and I know for sure I'm getting it right. The password I'm using has a capital letter, so I have to press Shift at the beginning of the password, do you think it could have anything to do with that? Maybe the login screen somehow takes too long to realize I let go of the shift key. I don't know though, just a thought.

I doubt it. Mine has capitals and special characters. I type it as fast as I can and it always works.

I suggest opening Notepad and typing your password as fast as you can and make sure the characters are coming out as expected. Maybe a wireless keyboard with a low battery? I don't know, but the Actiontec login page also works fine for me.

Now that is an interesting idea!

As I said I use a password manager to log into the router so that would not apply for me. But I am using a wireless keyboard and occasionally when I am typing something (in Windows Live Mail or Word or maybe a web page, actually pretty much any application) I will get two or three uppercase letters when I am pretty sure I only held the shift key down for the first letter. And frequently it misses that I held the shift key down so I get lower case when I meant upper case. Maybe I need to change the battery in my own keyboard, worth a try.

And if the battery is the issue and if the OP does use a wireless keyboard, that just might be it! Good post, thanks!

Usually on a laptop, and I have tried it in TextEdit, and the password comes out as expected, it's really weird. I guess I might just have to deal with it

I have found this to be true. If I type too quickly, the login fails on my Actiontec. I assume it has to do with how it does the extra *'s and ends up putting the characters in the wrong order.

.. I get this behavior only when logging in from my IPad. You have to let all the dots appear.

Hmm, think it could have something to do with the Safari browser? I'll try in another browser and edit this post.

EDIT: Same thing seems to happen in Firefox.
EDIT 2: Same thing happens for me in Windows as well. It's so hard to believe I seem to be the only one experiencing this issue on the computer.

I get the same issue, if I type the password to fast it says incorrect. I tried this 3-4 times, also tried it in notepad to make sure it is not my keyboard and it was right every time. So it is not just you.

I didn't see this post until just now, so that's 3 so far who appear to be experiencing the issue. I'm glad not to be the only one.

I'm curious as to any pattern that is causing this (though it's not happening to me).

I'm running Firefox on Windows 7 and Fedora Linux. Both work fine with typing the password as fast as possible.

It appears gadgetboyj is using a Mac.

Are the others who are having trouble also using a Mac?

"The stupid dots" as was eloquently phrased, is the result of a function internal to the router. A keypress must be processed before the function is ready for the next keypress.

Hooray! Verizon got something right! A buffer overrun results in an error and you have to try again.

If I can type it too fast, the password has no security value. Of course, this from a guy who has to look at the keyboard when typing my name.

It happens to me on my MacBook in both Mac OS and in Windows, as well as on a Gateway Windows PC, I tried in Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox on each (except IE in Mac OS).

I honestly don't know what I was using. I stopped using the Actiontec awhile ago and am not even home right now. However, I was most likely using Safari, Chrome, or IE on OS X, Windows XP, or Windows 7.

When I was using the Actiontec, I noticed that login would fail a lot. I eventually realized that I had to type much slower than I normally do in order to login succesfully.

I wonder if it's an issue that will ever be fixed.
