Purely based on the internet speed versus cost, I think I'm better off with Comcast. Not that it matters since you're probably the only one on DSLR who this service applies to...

I have fiber run to my house, and had fiber service for a few years, but unless the company can stay in business - you might end up back with comcast.

the free dounts and prizes are probably ok, prices seem like comcast standard rates, and "coming soon" doesn't sound like AVAILABLE NOW! but you'll have to see.
those are pretty low speeds, so I don't see any great advantage over a well managed HSI plant.

It's not terrible to have another parallel source and MAYBE once it is widely available you might see more competive offers from each provider.

So $59 minimum for a 20/3 Plan? No thanks...

I'll stick with my $45/month 25/4 plan. And soon to be $45/month 50/10 plan.

In my area (Morton, Illinois) there is also a company laying fiber (itv-3.com). They've already laid it to my curb, and are in the process of completing my neighborhood. Their bundle price for the services I currently have is quite a bit less than Comcast ($150 vs about $105 for similar Internet speed and TV channels, but with a 100 HD channels). Also no cap on downloads. Given my experience with Comcast's very poor customer service and creeping prices, I will switch as soon as the new service is available.

What an awful, awful bunch of speed offerings and prices for fiber.

You know the company is doing something wrong when you get more upload from a cable connection than fiber.

So...you're saying it's really not a goodbuy?

Well, the title of this thread does say "Goodbuy Comcast", even if the OP didn't really mean to say it.

Free donuts and potential "prizes" do not guarantee any particular level of performance or customer service. I have yet to see any ISP that did not claim to have the absolute top-tier of Customer Service...and yet, every single ISP that I have ever seen, has forums and blogs declaring them to be the spawn of Satan!

Frankly, they will do no better unless you pay for them to hire superior techs and customer service folks.

There is no magic here, and no free lunch. If you pay competitive rates, then they will be able to supply the same level of CS that everyone else supplies. They do not appear to be offering anything extraordinary in terms of cost versus performance.

Another side fo that equation is the cost and level of support needed depending on your infrastructure. A coaxial deployment is always going to cost more to maintain than a FTTP infrastructure. So, you can end up charging your customer's less but still provide the same or better service. Not saying that is how it will be, but there are different aspects to the equation.

same 50/10 here is 100.00 a month for current customers unless you want the 105 then it 200$

is there a comcast competitor ? keeping it low ?

Those upload speeds do look quite low for a fiber product.

Also, it looks like upload speeds are significantly less for Internet-only customers. You could buy the $125 triple play and get better upload speeds than the highest Internet-only tier. Not particularly appetizing.

You can knock Comcast all day (their customer service is very much hit-or-miss, and I'd rather have the same pricing all year than needing to be on the hunt for promos every six months). However around here I can get 50M down, 15M up internet service for $115 per month, with no term commitment and no requirement to buy additional services. That seems to be more than MetroNet is willing to offer in your area.

That company could easily offer 75/35 service on the top end, even if they're using 100 Mbps Active Ethernet for their fiber deployment, which is highly unlikely. If they used the more common GPON tech, they could run circles around Comcast speed-wise, just like Verizon FiOS is doing. But it looks like they're targeting 20 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up as their "sweet spot" for Internet-only service, with tiers getting significantly more expensive above that. I'm just not impressed with that, even if their TV lineup is awesome and their voice network is crystal-clear.

Awfully slow uploads even for cable standards and this is FTTH. Also did anyone else see this in the price guide?

quote:
Wireless Home Networking $9.99/$4.99 (router provided/router purchased)

Connect up to 5 computers in your home and you'll save money you would have otherwise spent on separate connections for each computer.
Please tell me this is some special router or are they charging you for using your own router? If so what a total rip-off!

It's amazing how many people are dismissing this new service -- the same people who I've seen yell that there needs to be more competition.

For those who don't get it, this new service will add competition to Comcast, which is a win for consumers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Metronet increases the speeds in a few months, after more people have signed up.

We've already seen Comcast offering faster speeds in heavily competitive markets (read: FiOS).

The reason Comcast is upping their game in Fios markets is because VZ's product is faster. If we have no compelling reason to switch from Comcast to this new service, how much competition is it really creating?
