[BC] Cable TV Filters

In December 2011, I noticed that I was getting a lot more tv channels than what I was paying for. I just have basic cable. I opened up my cable box (outside the house) and found the filters were removed.

I called Shaw the next day to tell them that I was getting extra channels that I was not paying for, I did not tell them that I opened the box and found the filters missing. They said they would send a truck down and install the necessary filters.

So, 6 months later, I'm still getting these extra tv channels at the basic cable price and they still have not installed any filters.

I consider the extra channels a gift from Shaw, since they have not done anything about it.

But, is there any reason why they would remove the filters in the first place?

Doesn't really matter too much,

When the DNU - Digital Network Upgrade happens, they'll go away anyways.

I had my filters removed about 6 months ago by a service tech, to fix not recieving digital channels I was supposed to get. The QAM carrier was being filtered

Often, the filters shouldn't be in the box on the side of your house, they should be where that cable connects to Shaw's main cable for the street (the other end of it)

Channels 23-54?

I think shaw MAY BE moving away from the analog filters since the digital tv signal is what shaw has been pushing. Im guessing some day in the future, you will see them gone. So if you reported it, enjoy it for now!

Yes, not "MAY BE", but is...

The DNU removes the analog teirs completely, leaving just basic in analog.

Figured so; i remembered reading somewhere that shaw has to have SOME analog channels, do to some crct thing. Not sure about it fully. Guess thats why basic will remain. Though I thinks is a good idea for some people who like the local channels and a few more, plus its less hassle (for some).

Not sure if it is a crtc ruling or not, or just convience to a percentage of customers who would refuse to use a cable terminal.

Bowen Island is 100% digital cable, no analog cable signal.

Just curious why would you complain to Shaw that your getting extra channels for free, doesn't make much sense LOL

yeah why you need to do that, who losing here, Shaw or you. Shaw has nothing to lose so enjoy them for free while they last cause they are not struggling for money or give a whoot so don't talk to Shaw.

Technically, theft of cable services is a felony offense - at worst you could be made to pay back what you owe for the "extra services", but there can be extra fines imposed for piracy of cable signals and even jail time. Yes, jail time.

I just wish Shaw had a better selection of cable boxes - theirs suck. You'd think something as basic as web-based scheduling of TV should be a given by now, as well as stuff like recording the show on one DVR and watching it on another (doesn't matter if you have gateway or not)... being forced to use such crappy equipment...

Should they try any of the 'theft of service' stuff,

He called them and reported it - otherwise what is to stop any/all cable providers from doing this - not filtering channels, a cutomer reporting extra channels, then not correcting it for years, then charging customers for them.

So, technically, because it was reported, it is not theft of service.

I guess you can say if you reported it, your hands are clean. Is it the subs responsibility? Probably a little more complicated than that. I for one have Dcatv and have no idea what channels Im to have! lol Not sure if it matters, cause shaw will up and change the line up on you when you least expect it! LoL

I kinda know what you mean, seems silly to call and complain about extra channels. (If your aware of it) But guess its the right thing to do.
