royphil345 posted : I noticed DVDFab doesn't seem to do a great job of converting to DIVX, unless there are some advanced options I missed. I ended up with a lot of artifacts that looked like they were flashing in darker scenes.

You could try ripping with DVDFab and converting with AVI.net (freeware). AVI.net does a high quality 2-pass conversion. Converting to XVID usually looks better than DIVX and you can choose 192 kbps for audio or even leave the AC3 audio untouched.

Shooting for a 700 MB file for a 90 minute movie usually looks pretty good. Maybe around 1.5 GB for better quality or if you want to keep the AC3 audio. Although, if DVDFab takes an hour on your computer, this may take longer. You'll have to see...

Help Choosing a Ripping Format for dvd

SteelersFan posted : I have a few store purchased DVD's that I'd like to rip to my computer for back-up purposes and to play on other devices. I'm using a program called Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum 4 (and DVD Fab Platinum 4) which can back-up an entire DVD for me. If I choose the vanilla back-up method it creates the video_ts and audio folders and the files end up being roughly 4GB. I'd like to keep the size relatively compressed though and decided to use .divx format which is based on the MPEG4 codec. It takes about an hour to rip, but the resulting file has muffled or tin can sounding audio. It's recording at 128 bit rate, but still sounds bad. The video is okay, not great, but obviously compressed. Am I doing this right? Is there something better I should be using and is about an hour a DVD par for the course?
