 | [Asterisk] Should I be concerned by these ping times?Just moed Asterisk to Rackspace and the below is what the ping time shows for sip show peers. The thing I don't get is if I ping the server from my computer, the ping times are around 20ms, so not sure why this shows so high? The 2 that are over 500ms are a remote user in another city 1 hour away from myself, which is all the other extensions.
Name/username Host Dyn Forcerport ACL Port Status
1177/1177 99.236.212.53 D N A 5060 OK (554 ms)
305/305 24.212.188.142 D N A 5060 OK (177 ms)
307/307 99.236.212.53 D N A 5060 OK (505 ms)
4945/4945 24.212.188.142 D N A 5060 OK (176 ms)
5343/5343 24.212.188.142 D N A 5060 OK (179 ms)
VoipMS/181 174.137.63.206 N 5060 OK (83 ms)
They all seem very high, should I be concerned? |

 | It's in Chicago. I'm in Toronto and then the person with the 500ms+ ping time is in Cambridge ON. |

| Who is their ISP (the Cambridge people)?
To me, even 170 ms seems high. One thing you can do to possibly "shorten" the loop is switch to chicago.voip.ms I think it is in the same building (DFT) with Rackspace and the pings should be around 2-3 ms. Of course the location of the voip.ms chicago server appears to be some closely guarded secret, so I don't know for sure. Try it and see.
This won't do anything for your high ping times to your remote extensions, but it will shorten the overall route. -- ...because I care. |

TrevIP Telephony AddictPremium join:2009-06-29 Victoria, BC kudos:4 | reply to mdshs I'd be inclined to believe these are artificially high numbers. I have no scientific proof to back this up, so here's my anecdotal evidence in it's place: I have noticed on some of my VPS' that asterisk shows high numbers when pings from the same machine to the same IPs are much, much lower.
Despite outrageously high numbers, users do not report any problems and actual in-call latency seems no worse than on a server that doesn't exhibit this 'quirk'.
My guess is that it's the way asterisk measures time on a VPS is not quite perfect. -- Wondering what I do? Find out at »www.digitalcon.ca Get your Obihai ATA in Canada. |

| You might be on to something. While not a VPS "per se", this install is running on Proxmox. All of the SIP extensions have artificially high ping times, where the IAX2 are accurate. -- ...because I care. |

 | Yeah very strange. Also because like I said if I ping the server from a terminal, then its around 20ms ping and not what it shows here.
The user in Cambridge is on Rogers, and then I am on TekSavvy in Toronto on the other ones. When I call into the phones from my cell to check voicemail etc it's all perfectly clear. |

Yep, something is fubar in the way Asterisk or FreePBX is reporting ping times. Here is the ping from the same server itself via CL. Big difference. -- ...because I care. |
