[AT&T] HSPA+

I have AT&T HSPA + available in my area is it a worthwhile upgrade from 3G. I ditched Straight talk and went with red pocket so All I to do is buy a phone off new egg or ebay to get 4G service.

Are you asking a question or telling us what you have done?

I am wanting to know if HSPA+ would be a worth while up grade from 3G given the cost of a new phone?

It depends on what version of 3g your phone is. If it's 7.2Mb, then it could easily help with speeds. If it's 14.4Mb 3g (or 4g depending) then less chance.

I am using the AT&T Avail with red pocket.

It hovers around 1Mb download speed.

Ouch! That's not very fast. Im not going to say getting a HSPA+ phone would help, cause just by looking at that, your either in a really crappy at&t area or red pocket throttles data. Either way, not going to help you much if at all.

Then red pocket might be throttling. It's kinda common with prepaid. Esp. with at&t. Happens less often with tmobile.

Yeah, the deep south isn't t-mobile best area. My point being, that MVNO's that use at&t tend to be throttled a lot more than MNVO's on tmobile (assuming you live in an 3g or 4g area)
at&t 3g is upto 7.2Mb, and your barely getting 1Mb so case in point.
You can check out simple mobile, im told they don't throttle as bad on at&t.

Correction, i meant straight talk. Sorry,
»www.straighttalk.com/
But, you pick. Just get the at&t sim card and you will get at&t as your main provider. so i don't think you need your phone sim unlocked at all. Works out of the box.

I tried it with a smart phone you get 100MB per day or 2GB per month. and no tethering is allowed. Kept getting calls about me using too much data so I said screw this and went to red pocket.

I thought red rocket had a 1Gb or 2Gb cap too? Their website shows 1Gb. (»goredpocket.com/plans)

The AT&T (ZTE) Avail is an HSDPA 7.2 Mbit phone, so upgrading phones isn't going to help you if 1 Mbit is the speed you're getting now in that area.

What may help is removing the proxy and username/pass, and leaving just the APN - but only if it's due to Red Pocket throttling.

Galaxy nexus at $350 is a really good buy for pre-paid use. It works with HSPA+ on T-mobile & AT&T.

I get 10mbps on AT&T HSPA+ and 8Mbps on T-mobile. But i live in a non congested area.

I found the key to success but somebody changed the lock.

ST sucks. Lack of roaming kills it for me.

What pre-paid does data roaming?

I read that the Net10 BYOD SIM roams, but not for data.

Not real sure, if any of them do data roaming. That is the reason they are so cheap.
