Re: Doorbell transformer One last test is you need to bypass the button ( connect temporally the two button wires together ) and then see if you have voltage across the bell , if the bell/chime is open, you won't see a voltage across the switch as if the bell chime is open its like two open switchs and its voltage you should test for, not current |

Speaking of toners... I have one of these: »www.tempo-textron.com/prod_detai···id=10416
And one of these: »www.stayonline.com/detail.aspx?id=41
(Thank my brother in law who bought them for me back in 2000!)
The @ss who cabled this place back in 2003 abandoned a Cat5 cable somewhere in the wall near the kitchen (or got the wall covering it and didn't want to figure out where it was), and I want to use it... been trying to find it, so I stuck an end of the 468 that sends the tone in the P&S cabinet downstairs where all the Cat 5's go, and attempted to trace it with the above toner. Had to shut off all power to the family room and kitchen to just hear the tone.
Is there some better equipment than above? The 468 test kit is the bomb for making sure the pairs are hooked up correctly, but for working in conjunction with the toner, it must not transmit too strongly... |

The 77HP throws a strong tone, the only device I know of that throws a stronger tone is a Throwmaster.

And the 200 FP has a hum filter that makes finding even the weakest tone easy.

However that 200FP will set you back about $100 but it works so well I paid for one out of my pocket even though at the time I could get all the standard 200B probes I wanted for free.

Yea that's simplex toning but if the OP has no clue as to where the cable is run it still will do nothing to help out. To trace that cable within the walls the OP needs something like a Dynatel 2273 aka the anteater, but for the cost that ain't happening. » solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/e···ode=trueWayne -- Madness takes its toll, please have exact change ready

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | reply to jester121 Good luck trying to find it.. I had a family in N.C. that the door bell transformer went out.. I checked the breaker panel.. behind the wall where the door bell was.. all I could guess was under the crawl space under the house or the attic.. I was not about to go under the house given it was a small space and I don't need to run into a snake..
Never checked the attic.. I don't know what she ever did.. All I know was she put some stupid intercom on which was not weather proof.
btw why is trying the transformer for the doorbell so hit or miss where they are? Can't they just write on the back of the beaker panel where the transformer is if a house has one? -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

Thanks... Two places to look, take down the chime and if behind it you find the transformer laying in a deep box your problem is solved, if not look for a couple of black wires and a setscrew, if you see that then the transformer is scabbed into the outside of the box and how you will replace has suddenly gotton a bit more complicated.

49528867Premium join:2010-04-16 Fort Lauderdale, FL kudos:3 | reply to jester121 Oh, one other place to look if your home is vintage and that is in the kitchen, is there a recessed outlet up at the high end of the cabinetry? It was common at one time to have a clock in the kitchen powered from a recessed outlet and that outlet (many times plastered over) was commonly used to power the doorbell from the same box.

Can't they just write on the back of the beaker panel where the transformer is if a house has one? Ha! That's pretty funny -- there were 2 breakers labeled when we bought the place, and both were wrong. I went through and mapped out every circuit, created a Visio floor plan with each receptacle/switch/fixture mapped to a breaker, and labeled the panel. This house was built in 1986 so it's not ancient.
I don't think there's a box in the wall cavity based on what I could see/feel, but I haven't dug the opening larger yet. |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | My aunt's house is from 1975 I think The attic opening.. lets just say you need to be a thin guy.. I'm 125 Lb and I looked at the opening it still looks like a tight fit.. and the dumb thing about it is the closet shelf is in the way where the opening is...
But the way you did it is great I wish others would do the same.. I hate flipping breakers on and off to figure out what is what.. |

Without a doubt the best I have used. I have the make/model you listed. Threw it away after picking up the fluke. |
