Tim Horton WIFI

I tested Tim Horton wifi for the first time located in Brampton, Kennedy & Sandalwood. It allows 20 minutes free but you can sign up (enter your email to create an account) to get unlimited access. The wifi does not allow HTTPs VPN's like hide my ass or proxify. So everything will be open unless the server site has HTTPS like Gmail.

how can it stop a https connection legally
that's like forcing you to be spied on
its against the law to spy on you but if they get the data it can point authorities your way even though that instance it cant lead to a charge

All of these silly free AP's limit you to 20 minutes by the MAC address.
Its trivial to just keep changing it.

I used to love getting free hotel wifi this way. Was very easy to sniff out and clone the MAC of someone who already paid since its unencrypted wifi.

and confirmed been to 3 stores to see what its about and everyone of them has no idea and that to come back in 1 -2 weeks
so how did the parent know they are going to stop https which helps keep users safe and secure, and vpns which business needs to use in communications.

ya lil crap wifi big coffee increase ....i can see the scam now.....
and unencrypted wifi dont mean i can't encrypt me to whomever i deal with , you then have to crack the messages/packets. GOOD luck with that when im in a chat about hamburger helper with the wifey...

I had actually tried in on Tuesday evening at the Tim Horton's at Highway 2 and Whites Road (742 Kingston Road I believe).

What was interesting was that the service seemed to branded via DataValet. AHH.. I see Bell is a partner with Datavalet.

Access seemed find; I was using it with my Kobo eReader.

so they dont need to block vpns and ssl as the dpi on back end will tell htem where your going although not what you are doing....

once word gets out its a bell partner and the lack a vpn and https use ....only a cop will use it ( nice way to pick out the turds in society )

I don't believe the OP said it doens't allow HTTPS, he said it doesn't allow HTTPS vpn/proxies.

So normal HTTPS sites will still work and be encrypted.

I haven't checked out the service to confirm this, that just seems ot be what OP said.

They are not forcing you to do anything. If you want to use their network, use it under their terms. Otherwise, GTFO.

Yep remember people, it is offered free and what are you expecting from a free wifi hotspot?

I go there, sip my hot chocolate and surf some model sites prowling for my next model purchase. If I want the latest tv show download, I'll do that at home.

FREE eh? like the website i give out at the cost of 70$ a month that i dont charge anyone to visit? FREE from a corporation means the true hidden cost is in the coffee prices that i bet dropped and you wont see a decrease .....seriously you think they are stupid its bell canada after all you know how much it costs for net in canada....its stupid pricing.
don't lie to us , if its free then i should be able to walk up NOT BUY anything and use it....ten bucks says that aint gonna be allowed....and 20 minutes barely gets you anything.....
even from email....OH and unencryted insecure use for email lol i bet osme vans are gonna start appearing in tim hortons parking lots showing you how stupid this idea really is....

if you want an open network allow people to protect themselves cause the next thing to happen is rooting people that use the service....

https when provided by the destination site works fine, also if you're using something like the "https everywhere" extension (which forces all sites providing https to serve you an https connection) your connection will also be secured.

As long as the provider informs you that they are providing an insecure connection they are under to obligation to provide you with anything else.

so how many non secure sites you think i use?
besides this one btw?
1 ...the cbc.ca website does not have nor force https....

you can setup a .htaccess file that forces all parts of your site to use ssl ergo https and by default apache does not log ssl....which then requires you to change the conf file and setup logs should you desire too.

seriously a 4 line .htaccess file in apache and whats your excuse for not protecting users.

and there are enough ways i can use ssl and ssh tunnled that you wont be able to stop what they really want to stop and thats piracy ....no moron goes to a coffee shop where cops eat there donuts to download ....hahaha

and again i ask why the heck use it and risk the pc your using it with too?
sounds almost like contributory liability to me.....oh hear use this but we aint liable if you get hacked , rooted or some of your stuff gets stolen cause we cant take the time to allo9w you to be safe and need to stop you cause we want you to be at risk?
what excuse can you give me wont stand up in a court. THIS service should be turfed before it begins or people allowed to do stuff form there pc to pc or out there securely.
by doing that you in fact get a PR win that you can say you might even have a brochure about safety on the net and what not
give it when they buy a coffee....

this feels like vic toews idea of the internet.......

I don't care how many unsecure sites you use, and this site is fully compatible with https everywhere, and will give you an https connection whenever prompted to do so.

If they offer protection they're liable... that's why, and their lawyers, and accountants probably told them that was a bad business decision.

Offering a service "as is" is still better than offering no service at all.

The Tim Hortons in Hamilton at Clappisons Corners has free wifi, 2 hours worth, the premium service appears unlimited..they just want your first name and address. Had in issues getting it despite actually never going into the store.

i argue the opposite that if you prevent my ability to protect myself your even worse liability then making it so i have none.

look up what contributory liability is and no matter how you try and word it son its a fact what i said.

its like saying its ok we are gonna sell you a house and dont worry you dont need locks but if ya do were not liable
WHO sells houses without locks these days?
and the first person getting hacked there will make news and ill be right here slapping the inability to even bother to protect ones self
as the reason.

its one thing to say look if you use out service you are liable for all potential damage ....its another to prevent me form using all forms a abilities that might protect me.

and your right thats why civil lawsuits happen against bell canada so often and why tim hortons using bell canada might also be an issue for a lot a people in the first place....not you though .....

and you cant even post a proper https link here
last time i checked that did not work and trying to use a proxy might aslo afford protection till it gets um er compromised .....once https is enacted me to you is encrypted i don't need httpsanywhere everywhere upaskirtthere proxies.

If you buy a house, you can install your own locks. You're getting free WIFI here - take it as it is, or don't take it at all. Seriously...

nice try you cant tell me that...your and tim hortons idea is your ok you will be safe but if you get robbed killed raped or otherwise harmed NOT tims or your fault....

contributory liability lock stock and barrel and they are opening themselves before it begins to a class action lawsuit for misrepresentation....that its a safe service to use.
let them try and tell you that

"new home built by tm hortons no locks or any ability to keep yourself safe"
heck it even has holes in the roof and a giant metal pole formt he roof to the floor so you might get zapped by lightning its ok you make it safe but heres the click you are not allowed....
ya some house .....back to the net

to business you cant safely use it
to parents with a kid not safe
to anyone but a hacker not safe
and you think your able to make your data and your privacy safe somehow when there apprent goal is to offer a free service then not allow you to keep your data and privacy might even be a privacy violation as they have to purposely block this stuff that makes millions all round safe. Get your pc screwed up or have people get screwed over is worth a coffee and timbit , well sorry i do not think so.

and i dont even have a wireless laptop
and you should care how many secured sites you use....
sounds to me like someone wants people to use insecure websites for some reason oddly its not me ....

getting tired old man you mispelled my nick
and misrepresenting the fact that the service is safe to use is a actionable suit and its something one can in ontario quebec and BC can be class action suited.

the message here is allow the https at min ...then you got something safe to use in pr messages and lesson your contributory liability....
lawyers aren't techies....its why we techies got to tell them stuffies....

hey lets do banking unencrypted the above guy thinks its AOK.....oh you don't well why would i surf any other way?
Vic toews wants to spy on you after all why give him anything to spy on .....and hey yea its nice to offer it freely but its useless to use OH GEE wonderful want some examples of free and useless?

you a cop or something spying on users around here....
aint it great to be anonymous
only admins get to see whom you are....maybe a hacker can visit of course and glean data .....cause its unencrypted in the logs....
another issue what is tim hortons doing with all this data
yup i thinks there is issues with it and its actually work to stop HTTPS and STOP encryption use. by default my net doesn't disallow it.....

now elquiton tell me WHY they then disallow it....on what grounds and how that makes me having my coffee want to use the net they provide...so far no one has said shit to me that gives me a reason to talk to my american partner about my animated tv show, the game also being developed or anything cause its all NON encrypted and my stories or meshes or audio clips could get sniffed
sorry no use it.....he by all means go ahead just as tim says dont whine to them ok WHY cause i warned ya and if they put a similar warnign up and you get borked then you have but yourself to blame...

Who is arguing with you? Not I. There are always cautions in using a public wireless network which is free. That's called "using common sense".

No VPN means more business travellers will go to Starbucks or another location that does support VPN. When I'm having a copy and catching up on work, most of the time I need to be on VPN.
