anon posted : I've been having latency issues as well. My pings are spiking all over the place. When I call TimeWarner they tell me my speeds are fine (which is not the problem anyway) and that my pings are acceptable, which they clearly are not. It's impossible for me to play any online games. I've had RoadRunner for 12 years and this problem has just started in the past few weeks. I've done all the troubleshooting I can. Updated drivers, checked for viruses/spyware, disabled firewall, connected my computer directly to the modem, had a tech come to check my modem, he found no problems but replaced my cables outside anyway and still the problem persists. It definitely seems to get worse during high traffic times (5pm-11pm). Also, my neighbor a couple blocks away has the same service I do and has no problems. Again, my pings aren't consistently high, just spiking.

I'd appreciate if anyone could help me troubleshoot further.

Located: Hudson Valley, NY.

bobjohnson posted : Those are generally the only two things that cause issues such as what you have going on. Usually what happens is there is a tap problem and your signals go nuts and cause all the problems and your amp (which HSI isn't supposed to be running thru anyways) amplifies the problem. Also less frequently, bad outdoor splitters or bad cables. You have covered all the bases on this one.

After looking at the logs and upstream stats for my modem he said that basically need a plant tech team to trace frequencies and find where the noise occurs, and that it could also be plant misconfiguration.

But both client relations and techs just giving me runaround now, and after replacing lines to my house twice I am not sure what else to do, issue occuring on the pole or on way to plant somwhere but noone seems to care about fixing it. They are correct in saying that you cant switch back to a Docsis 2 modem with your tier. Also it is not your gateway that causes most issues, if any, but the system in some areas is just not good enough or in some cases just not proper for the newer tech to work well. Your uncorrectable codewords count looks as if either you have a tap issue (since your tv is acting badly) or your modem outlet is ran through your house amp. D3 needs to be as close to 0db as possible downstream and your upstream looks ok but the snr which you cant see is what can break your latency.

Huh? Picking the worst numbers for each channel:

8.5dBmV is pretty well within spec. -10 to +10 is conservative, DOCSIS spec is -15 to +15.
39.9dB is great for SNR.
48.2 is a nice number of the upload level to be at. 40-52 is within spec.
If his modem has been up for any length of time, 28 correctable and 117 uncorrectables is practically nothing.

His lag problems are likely elsewhere.

--
AT&T U-Hearse - RIP Unlimited Internet 1995-2011
Rethink Billable.

riot808 posted : i've had roadrunner connection for about 10 years now and only recently started having really bad issues about 7 months ago one day i woke up to play some xbox and noticed my lag was horrible so i power cycled the modem and router i had at the time thinking it would help... but it didn't so i thought to myself well maybe it's just a momentary thing... well i was horribly wrong.... it's been 7 months now and counting and my lag is still persisting... so i upgraded my connectiong to the highest roadrunner offers here in hawaii which is 50mb down and 5 up along with it i upgraded from a regular modem to a gateway motorola surfboard sbg6580 i've been through 3 routers since i had an old linksys then upgraded to a linksys e4200 that one broke after 3-4 months of having it... it just wouldn't power cycle up the lights were all frozen on them even after unplugging for hours... and trying to hold the reset button so i sent that back and got a asus rtn56u which i currently use... i am in the process of returning it for a new one because it got frozen while i was trying to upgrade it's firmware.. this is what the techs have tried... they rewired the coax cable from the modem to the box... they said they found a error in the drop on the streets box... and apparently fixed it... they took 3 splitters off of the cable line... they swapped the modems to see if the one i had was defective... the tech support phone operator also downgraded my connection to 30mb and 5 up to see if that would help... it didn't... so besides all this they just do speed tests now and say im getting what im paying for and they basically wrote me off so i've been trying to read about networking and what i can do to fix it and im stumped and looking for some help.. i would really appreciate any information tips tricks guides... please remember im not so technically advanced and am still learning...

also i noticed theres a huge delay when changing channels on the tv often does this weird pixelation fades out goes black and finally turns to the channel sometimes even has almost a minute delay to the next channel also when i turnt he cable box off theres a black box in the middle and on the boarders the tv is still going in the back... then eventually shuts off... sometimes it doesn't and we've also noticed that channels go missing randomly that we pay for... i don't know if this has anything to do with the internet but ever since my connection got bad the tv started acting funky.

thank you in advance
