Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | USG200 suddenly died? I've had a USG200 working flawlessly since February. All of a sudden, about an hour ago, I notice my entire network is broken - can't access anything.
I go down and check, and the USG200 is... dead. Entirely dead. No power LED. No nothing. I try a new 12V power supply and... nothing.
So I dig out my old partially defective ZW35 and it powers on just fine using the USG200's power supply. Right now that's what I'm limping along with, because I cannot get a flicker of life out of the USG200.
The only thing I can note, is one of the external 12V power supplies I have has a little status LED on it, and whenever I plug the USG200 into it the LED dims and flickers. It's a 42w power supply, and the USG200 claims max 20 watts. Seems to me like there's a dead short in this thing. There were zero warning signs - everything was pefect until *poof*.
Any ideas? I can't believe a product as expensive and outwardly as well-build as this has bit the dust so quickly. It's WAY overpowered for the network its running on, and I had it spaced out with 1.5 inches of air on the top and bottom from my switch, so there's really no excuse... and judging by Zyzel's service response times (claim 2 days to answer an email and lilke 5 business days processing on RMAs?) I don't think I'm going to have my USG200 back until summer's over (especially considering I'm in Canada).
So annoyed right now. |

I have had excellent support from their team. Understand your frustration but electronics do fail however ZyXel gear do have quality components based on my inspections -- quality gear sometimes do fail but rarely unless you're unlucky
I also recommend UPS in case you may not have one already deployed. |

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | I emailed, because it was Sunday morning and they don't open until Monday monday, and since I work nights I would have to wait until Monday evening to give them a call... so on the off chance they email before then, it seemed like an okay idea.
And I have a UPS. A big online one. An APC Smart-UPS RT 3000 XL. So there are *no* power problems getting to my equipment.
I wish Zyxel-related shit would NOT happen to me. I'm now 0-for-2. |

Ensure you get a ticket trouble number and they will try to log into your router - obviously a non-starter, so just be patient with process and you should get an RMA number etc. |

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | How can they try to log in when I can't even get a power LED? |

FYI, shit is fabricated by digestive tracks --- to correct Brano -- in your case your USG200 must have been handled by resource that may have been suffering from digestive failure. |

 | 116 lbs and rack mountable; surely one needs to hire a gorilla along with the purchase.

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | It basically powers my "network room" and the entire home business. Once again it's a bit overkill for my needs (I also have one expansion battery pack), but it's about my 3rd sizable UPS, with the others all failing (I had a Deltec online model that started putting out 50hz 120v! seriously!) so I spent the money on something good. And yeah - it's one SUPER HEAVY beast.
Honestly, it's been great. If I shut down the whole office except for my primary PC, I'm good to work for about 4.5 hours. Always thought APC was overpriced, but now I know there's a reason they charge what they do. And during a day-long power outage last year, I actually plugged my gas water heater into it for some hot water (it's a computerized model, so no power, no hot water).
I did get an email back from Zyxel this afternoon, with an RMA form attached. |

 | Once I realized that I could never buy enough UPSs to cope with NH storm multi-day power outages, nor tolerate days without refrigeration, cooking, heat, showers, etc., I installed a 20 kW auto transfer motor generator system. With all of the trenching and electrical work it took me a good part of a summer's spare time.
Now the seven APC UPSs that I have running only have to work for a minute before power is restored. This saves on battery replacement cost, because the batteries generally have enough capacity to run that long for well past their normal 3-year replacement date.
(Because the apparent source impedance of a 20-kW generator due to motor load change response time is higher than that of a pole transformer, sudden load increases can drop the voltage at the UPSs below their thresholds for taking over. So occasionally the UPSs will also momentarily supply power when the house is on the generator.)
The propane tank can supply more than a week of normal house power use without a refill. Take that, Public Service of NH!

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | Yeah, I also have a 20kW diesel generator purchased around Y2K timeframe (ahem). It only runs part of the house, but the UPS circuit is fed off it at least. Don't get to use it too much - the outages around here are usually limited to a few hours, although there have been day-long ones maybe twice. |

HankSearching for a new FrontierPremium join:2002-05-21 Burlington, WV kudos:1 | Just curious if the UPS was powered by the generator when the USG200 failed? The some UPS's like to see a pure sine wave, some generators do not emit a pure sine wave. |
|
Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | No, no power outages that night. Although I know the APC is happy with the generator output (and that was a concern when purchasing). |
|
 | reply to Sunfox Ideally, we would all use devices like the UPS that Falcon manufactures, which is continuously on-line converting whatever it gets from the power mains to sine wave purity. However, Falcon seems to fall into the category of "If you have to ask your can't afford it" because I've never seen any prices on their website or indications that they have any distributors.
Probably there are others making on-line UPS. (I think there is a different name for this technique, but don't remember it.) So far, my equipment tolerates what the APCs pass when the generator is running.

Sunfox join:2003-12-14 Markham, ON | reply to Anav Well, I did get my USG-200 back on Monday. Very fast shipping from Zyxel... although I'm not terribly thrilled by the scrapes on the bottom of the "new" unit, all the lint in the network ports, or the fact that they forgot to include the rubber feet (clearly indicated on my RMA).
But, the important part, it's working... and thank goodness I had a backup of my configuration! |

mozerdLight Will Pierce The DarknessPremium,MVM join:2004-04-23 Nepean, ON | You should let them know that the shipping department were sloppy .. There is no excuse for that type of handling and that employee should be FIRED. |
|
 | reply to Sunfox Lint in network ports? Are they running a laundry on the side? Are you sure it was the same unit? Ser. No. still the same?
