Re: EBOX VS Teksavvy 16Mb in Montreal - Should I switch to EBOX? In my case I want POTS, reliable 911 service is a must for me and I like knowing I have a phone that will continue to work in most power outages. I would love to give my POTS to someone other then Bell, if it could be had cheaper but I don't think that is possible in Quebec yet. |

I have cable internet with EBox and my telephone with Videotron which is much cheaper even if you do not have any other services than the price you pay with Bell.
In 10 years I have not lost my phone service once as the phone modem has a 6 hour battery in the event of a power failure. Longer than that then you would lose service
edit: Videotron seems to have changed the pricing structure on the phone, used to be $4 for the first service and $2 for each additional. They seem to be pulling a Bell now |

 | I would want more than 6 hours, but that's me and I am willing to pay for that.
Also the 911 is not the same, I'm not sure 911 service can ever be as good as POTS 911. |

 | reply to zorxd $2 difference, $24 over a year, not a big diff, but no unlimited off hours makes a big difference. |

The 6 hours limitation is of course a valid issue. I just can't make myself give money to Bell (many many many issues with them in the past when I was a subscriber) and outside of their insane internet rates I have never had a service issue with Videotron |

 | Thanks for letting me know the Videotron 911 is the same as POTS 911, every year I mark on my calendar to call Bell to cancel my phone service so that they give me their retention rate, I looked at the Videotron rates and after the 12 months promo is up, my Retention pricing is close enough that it is not worth making the switch in addition to wanting more than 6 hours in case of a long term power outage.
I hope one day I will be able to subscribe to a Tekssavy POTS. |

I just can't make myself give money to Bell (many many many issues with them in the past when I was a subscriber) and outside of their insane internet rates I have never had a service issue with Videotron There is no such thing called POTS 911. It is either e911 or regular 911.
Regular 911 is where the AAA record of user address/name is not routed to a PSAP emergency call center. The agent will ask your address before sending police/ambulance or firefighters. If the call is dropped they have no way to know where you are calling from because your service is considered MOBILE.
e911 which comes standard on POTS or with the Cable company is sending the AAA record to the PSAP emergency call center because the line is not considered MOBILE. They know where you are calling from. That is one of the reason why the cable company is putting lock ring on their telephony modem so that clients cannot move it easily to another location.
Some VoIP provider have e911 option available. Electronic box do provide a e911 service for free upon request.
As for reliability, POTS is superior in my opinion because they have battery and generator in CO so if there is a huge power failure like we had in 1997 they can push voltage into the copper and your phone work.
With the cable company there is a small UPS into the modem so it is good for a few hours but after it's dead and they have no backup battery. With voip you can achieve better results with a real UPS for 50-100$ at any computer shop.
Hope this help. -- Electronic Box Inc. - Jean-Philippe Béïque Ebox forum »ELECTRONICBOX |

This is assuming your internet won't be down during the power outage. |

That depends on the relative priority for battery backup power that your telco puts on internet versus telephone; if the power is cut to the equipment providing your internet, it's also cut to the equipment providing your POTS. -- Developer: Tomato/MLPPP, Linux/MLPPP, etc »fixppp.org |

I think in the case of packet to cable technology of the cable companies the whole cmts needs to be working so there are no differences.
For DSL it is probably different but in my last outage of 12+ hours my ups was able to hold the dsl sync for the whole day. It is probably case by case. |

AFAIK Videotron offers no warranty that cable internet will continue to work during a power outage. So it may or may not work with a UPS on your cable modem.
On the other hand their cable telephony service should continue to work. Until the battery in the modem/ata combo is empty, of course. But you can add a second battery or plug your own UPS if you need more time. |

 | reply to EBOXvsTEKSAV I've had both, and both are excellent providers. |

 | reply to EBOXvsTEKSAV If you go the true VOIP route (not Videotron) and have a home alarm you need to make sure it is supported and then check with your home insurance as some will not accept it |
