Frequent Disconnects Plaguing Me

I have been with Qwest then CenturyLink for 4 years with very dependable service. I have DSL with no telephone.

For the past month or so, I have been having regular outages that require rebooting my modem. First every few weeks now 3 or 4 days. I am on the road most of the time so its not easy for me to power cycle the modem/router every time this happens. I also have my security system running on my DSL so it is important that it keep running. I have to keep sending someone over to my house to reboot.. YUCK..

I suspect something going on over at CenturyLink but I am sure they are going to tell me that my equipment is broken. I think I have an Actiontec M1000

My original modem was also a router but I set it up to be just a modem and used another router. I would have rather just had a modem but what I got is all that Best Buy in Salt Lake City had at the time.

Any suggestion on what I should buy if I only want a modem?

I am getting ready to start the dialog with CenturyLink and am not excited about how this is going to go. These things usually are a nightmare.

My advice, as this also happened to me, is to just get a gateway from CTL, as third-party routers won't really improve your speeds or stats. I can tell you with utmost certainty that it is your hardware, though.

I started out with a Westel 7500 that was being leased from CL and to get away from the monthly charge I bought an Actiontec modem/wireless router..but it did the same thing you're describing.

Thought maybe I had a defective one and returned it for another one...same problem.

I then bought a used Zyxel 660 modem and bridged it to a Medialink wireless router and I've never had the problem again.

That's one thing I'd recommend against is getting a Zyxel gateway. I'm assuming you meant the basic 660, right mooch? Because the 660HW is the worst freaking gateway I've ever used.

I am reading your comments with interest... I get confused because everyone calls modems gateways, routers, etc... I really want to use my own router as I have a fixed IP and some special configurations. They originally set me up with PPPoE. If I remember right, my Actiontec was set up in Bridge Mode.

CL shows that the 660R-D1 is compatible for me. Is that the one you are recommending?

Thanks!

Gateways, Routers, etc.. = Router with a DSL Interface.

A plain DSL Modem doesn't do any routing. It's more like an interface between the phone line to an actual router. It's the external router that does PPPoE and routes traffic.

yep, it's the basic 660R that used to be leased to Embarq customers. The first used one I bought for cheap worked so well that I bought another one as a backup.

Yes, I've had very good luck with that basic modem, has never dropped the connection...possibly, others may have had a different experience with this one?

From what I read, the 660R is still a router. I would need to set it up in bridge mode to use my own router.

I also see a ZyXEL P660M which seems to be ONLY the modem. I would use my own router to do the PPPoE and have no setup on the ZyXEL P660M.

Am I getting that right?

@af.mil

I'm having the same issues with disconnecting for the past 3 weeks or so. It seems to happen only between 2-6pm and only days where it's above 88ish degrees. Can heat play a factor with century link internet? I've had a tech come out and do everything short of re-wiring our house.

I wouldn't be surprised, especially if the wiring is in one of the nodes that has been hit, and 'repaired' with black plastic covering it. The temperatures inside that must be extremely high. I can't see wiring that's likely already on edge due to age performing as well under very high heat. (much higher than the air temperature on the outside of the box)

I was told that they have to drop me from 3 meg to 1.5 meg because of the heat. At one time, I was moving along smoothly at 5 meg! I would like clarification and confirmation of this from someone. After all, if this is the case, then why are most of my disconnects in the middle of the night???

My issue was a broken line to the pole. They fixed it and I'm at a solid 5mbps/896kbps now.. even in the 100 degree heat.
