| New USB 3.0 3TB Western Digital My Book Hangs at POST. I just got a brand new MyBook Essentials USB 3.0 3TB external drive.
It works great except when I reboot.
If the drive is connected to any port on the laptop or dock or even a USB hub the system gets to the HP POST screen and no further.
I have to power off the laptop and remove the drive then power on.
If I wait until Windows starts to load it boots fine.
Windows 7 64bit HP EliteBook 8560W 8GB Ram
Attached is a dump of the BIOS.
I have disabled Floppy Boot, USB Boot, Legacy USB Support. Western Digital also mentions disabling SES but I don't see an option for that.
Thanks for any suggestions. Dave |

koitsuPremium,MVM join:2002-07-16 Mountain View, CA kudos:19 | This sounds like a compatibility quirk between the HP system BIOS and the WD drive. It may have to do with USB 3.0 (vs. 2.0) compatibility (and who's to blame (HP or WD) is anyone's guess).
My advice to you is to engage HP Support about this and be very diligent/persistent. They will certainly recommend silly things to you that have no relevancy ("try holding your left knee while powering on the machine while waving a dead chicken"), but go through it anyway and do not let up. If they insist on you sending your computer back to them, politely refuse, as I strongly doubt that's the problem -- instead recommend they engage a Tier 3 engineer, preferably someone familiar with their system BIOS, to look at the problem. The reason being: the problem, to me, smells of a BIOS bug/quirk.
You might see if there's a BIOS upgrade available and try that first, of course.
A possible workaround, BTW, might be to (assuming such an option exists in the BIOS) to disable booting from USB devices. If you ever need to boot from a USB flash drive, etc. you'll need to remember to adjust this setting, but what I said might suffice as a workaround.
Also, regarding SES: not relevant to your environment/situation. You can read about what SES is but it's highly technical. SES, SES-2, and SAF-TE, simply put, are underlying informational protocols that are used for enclosures (think external drive bays, or even hot-swap bays) where you can get things like temperature, alarms, fan RPMs, etc. for the enclosure itself. These exist for SATA, SAS, and SCSI. So like I said, it doesn't apply to your situation given what you're doing -- it really smells of an HP BIOS bug. -- Making life hard for others since 1977. I speak for myself and not my employer/affiliates of my employer. |

| Thanks,
Per my post I did disable USB boot but no luck.
BIOS is latest from 6/6/2012
Well, it's not a big enough deal to go through tier 1.
I'll probably put it on another computer.
Thanks for the reply.

| WD has a "SES Driver", but that is for Windows and doesn't come into play if it doesn't even get to the point of booting Windows. Said driver isn't even necessary if you are just using it for storage.

 | reply to workablob i and others ran into this prob on an Alienware laptop. if anything was pluged into a USB 3.0 port, the lappy would not boot. if its moved to USB 2.0 it works fine. i have the same problem on my Sabertooth 990fx. different chipsets so i have to assume its a bug with the 3.0 ports |

I can boot into Windows fine with it plugged in but the system will only "see" that it's there if I unplug the drive and then plug it back in..as long as I don't reboot then the drive stays visible...weird..

| reply to LocutusBorg It happens regardless of being plugged into 3.0 or 2.0 port.
FYI, it's plugged into an old Optiplex GX260 Domain Controller and works fine even on a reboot.
I'll just use the older MyBook 1TB USB 2.0 on the 8560W
Thanks,

I think I've found the solution. If your running newer hardware you may have a problem.
Here are my stats:
I'm running a i5-2000K on a Z68 Chipset, a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B2 rev. 1.
I have an My Book Essential 3TB it would stop recognizing the drive on reboots and shut downs. It would just come up as a Unknown Device. It seemed as my computer was posting it would slow down and the drive wouldn't wait to be detected. If I unplugged and plugged it in on reboot it would detect it. If I didn't the drive would either turn off, or stay on with a solid blue light. It would then be detected as a Unknown Device and wouldn't work.
I am running it on a USB 3 Etron USB controller built onto my motherboard. I'm using the Etron 104 driver as I had problems making an image of my drive using the latest 105 driver.
I solved the problem by changing a setting in my BIOS. Under the Integrated Peripherals, I disabled the USB Storage Function. Which is described in my motherboard manual as "whether to detect USB storage devices, including USB flash drives and USB hard drives during the POST." The default being Enabled.
I disabled it and I have NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!
I hope this helps. |

Not sure why this happens but it's not the first time i've seen this happen. |
