[Speed] Speed Question

I currently have Comcast's Performance Starter [6 down/1 up] which is sufficient to stream Netflix in HD [single stream household, hardwired to a Roku]. I'm using an older modem and router [Motorola SB5120 & Linksys WRT54G] and it does achieve the advertised speed when I measure it using Xfinity's speed test. Is there any advantage to me in updating either the modem or the router particularly in terms of maximizing speed?

If you consistently achieve the speeds you subscribe to, then probably not.

Given your situation, no it wouldn't help. But given Comcast's current/upcoming upgrades, if you own your modem and want to upgrade to the latest model, I would start with this: »www.amazon.com/Zoom-DOCSIS-Cable···e+modems

Aside from any increased speeds, your connection would be a great deal more stable over the SB5120 you have now. But if you're having no problems, upgrading at the time is optional.

Glad your connection works out.

I would agree with the masses but I do have pause because of the halted updates from Linksys of the WRT54G router. A new router would allow better wireless with wireless N, plus it would have faster processing speed, but mainly it would be more secure with more currently dated firmware. »homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Router···prod.htm

Honestly if you want a cheap, up to date router, an Encore 2AN3 is a fraction of the price of a Linksys equivalent. Around $27 from Newegg and has very reasonable performance...from experience.

Sounds good.
