Re: Trash removal question

My mom owns a house in a small sized city. The city awards a city wide contract to a private company to collect trash weekly from every house. Each resident is billed by the city, and the city pays the trash company. The city has an ordinance that every residence in city limits must pay the city for trash service. If you refuse to pay they can put a lien on your house and foreclose. She pays $10.97 a month for weekly service of up to 5 trash bags. The contract is currently with Republic Services.

I used to live in small town. The town was served by two trash companies, Republic Services and Ray's Trash(small company). Each resident had the option of choosing who to get service from. There was no ordinance requiring you to have trash service. We paid $45 a quarter for weekly service of up to 5 bags with Ray's Trash.

I now live out in the country. There is only one company that picks up trash, although there is no ordinance that you must have trash pickup. We pay Republic Services $90 a quarter for 2 96 gallon cans. If we only had 1 96 gallon can it would only be $50 a quarter. $30 a month is expensive, but obviously in a rural area the routes are not nearly as profitable.

It looks like Springfield charges $80 per year for 1 95 gallon can with similar must pay conditions to my mom's city. Under $7 a month for weekly pickup of a 95 gallon can is I think you will find a below average price.

Garbage fee is 10.00/month and part of the our water bill. No limit on trash as far as I know. City provides one 55 gallon container and a 30 or 55 gallon all-in-one recycling container upon request. My brother lives in the unincorporated part of Horry County(Conway), SC. He has to take his own trash to the city refuse yard.

I pay $30.09 every quarter ($10.03/month) for weekly trash, yard waste, and recycling pickups. The company is The Ratto Group in California. »unicycler.com/

For trash, I have the smallest can, 20 gallon.

We pay $100 per quarter.

Must be in bags (or sealed boxes) and we supply our own cans.

I know its not the cheapest but everyone out here is on 4.44 acres or more.

It took 5 years of living out here before this company even came along. It is worth every penny.

When we took it to the dump ourselves it was $15 fee at the dump (would go once a month). Keeping trash away from animals isn't exactly easy and then dealing with 30 day old trash that has been sitting in 105F heat is no fun either. Not to mention the dump is 20 miles away and we get 10 mpg with the tow rig (only vehicle we will tow with).

$18/month for 98gal wheelie/wk and another 98 for recycle/wk.

The township had contracts with many companies over the years and 2 years ago they decided to go it alone.

I think we're doing about 30% with the single stream recycling.

We have a few options where I live.

Waste Pro charges something like $50 a quarter for twice weekly pickup. They only allow 32 gallon cans and allow up to 5 of them.

Veolia charges $52 a quarter for once weekly pickup, but they do provide a 96 gallon can as part of that.

Florida Express Environmental offers $30 a quarter for twice weekly pickup and allows 32 gallon cans, up to 5.

I wonder if many cities don't have similar "rules". I know of no one in Dayton that has private trash pick-up for residential service (the city itself does the work and also is contracted with a couple nearby cities). I can't imagine it's very cost-effective for a 3rd-party to pick up randomly all over the city at addresses here and there...

When I was in CA, it was about $60 month for 3 cans (Trash, Recycle, & Yard), plus a couple of bulk pick-ups, and x-mas tree pickup. This was a private company. Hazardous household waste was handled by the county at no cost with unlimited drop-offs.

In AZ, I have a city service and I pay about $18/month for 2 cans (Trash and Recycle, no yard) and they will also do bulk pickup, but no x-mas tree (but they do have drop-off locations for that). Twice a year Hazardous drop-off. Once nice thing is they have large roll-off recycle bins placed throughout out the city where you can drop off any excess recycling you have (very handy during the holidays). Some of the surrounding communities don't have recycling and people use those bins for drop-off as well. The city will take any recycling they can get as it is $$ for them. Site note, our trash and recycle are picked up on different days. Apparently costs them less to do it this way.

Couple possible/likely reasons: 1) Different crew / truck is used for trash vs recycled material, 2) Residents think the stuff they recycle is just being mixed with trash and taken to landfill*.

* Dayton had that problem in the past as they use the same type of "garbage truck" for recycled material and people complained. They eventually painted the trucks that light shade of green commonly used with 'recycle' logos and also painted a giant recycle logo on the trucks !

Darlington Co, SC.. for years we had to pay $0.50 for every bag of trash we took to the county pick-up point. The grocery stores, and corner stores sold the allowed yellow bags. They were thin and would bust with minimal loading, so you used a "hefty" bags inside the yellow bag...that was stoopid and a lot of folks burned their trash in burn barrels, in pits etc to avoid the fees. County Council finally recinded the "yellow bag fee" and now allow any resident to take their trash to a county pickup point or you may contract with a private firm..no yellow bag needed BUT .no burning is allowed by county ordinance any longer - fines are steep and the FD is enforcing the outdoor burning ban...

San Diego includes yardwaste, recycling and trash pickup with property taxes.

Although most apartment and condo dwellers and businesses pay for garbage pickup, residents of single-family homes do not, thanks to the so-called People's Ordinance of 1919.

Safe to say that the rates are, ummm, market driven. Do they have any competition in your area ?

Not only that, but it also depends on the fees charged to them from the local landfill they dump at.
