On February 27, 2000, "60 Minutes" TV broadcast was about a top-secret Global Surveillance Network is called Echelon, and it's run by the National Security Agency and four English-speaking allies: Canada, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

Echelon was the old system done in the 80's mostly. It basically sucked in all international calls via satellite then performed keyword searches. Nowadays satellites aren't around much, everything is fiber optic, thus the need for a new system.

Perhaps, in one form or another, they'll do what the Brits have already done: In the UK you will go to jail for Encryption. The erosion of rights and freedoms in the Western world (including the US) under the guise of combating terrorism or some other threat-d'jour is accelerating before our very eyes...

I believe this has gone both ways in the US.

Feds unlock suspect's encrypted drive, avoid Constitution meltdown

Judge Rules Refusing to Decrypt Hard Drive is Covered by Fifth Amendment

The whole thing is that you're going to be put in jail for years until it gets worked out.

But in the end, you can't make math illegal, which is all encryption is. However, with the rate the US population is failing in math you may not have to.

Put out forest fires.

DARPA Creates Machine Which Extinguishes Fires With Sound
Posted by samzenpus on Sunday July 15, @11:04PM
from the wall-of-sound dept.
SchrodingerZ writes
"The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is known for making odd scientific advances ranging from hypersonic unnamed rockets to bionic prosthetic limbs to insect-sized reconnaissance drones. But recently DARPA has made a interesting advancement in the field of fire suppression. Using two speakers arranged on either side of an open liquid fuel flame, an acoustic field was emitted and engulfed the fire. 'The sound increases air velocity, which then thins the area of the flame where combustion occurs, known as the flame boundary.' This make the flame weak and much easier to douse. Another wonderful thing about this: it's not even that loud! DARPA began its testing in 2008, stating that despite extensive research in this area, there have been no new methods for extinguishing and/or manipulating fire in almost 50 years. The agency plans to expand on this experiment and try to make it successful on a practical scale."

Which reminds me....Here’s a simple arithmetic question: A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Thank's for the awesome link this needs to stay in the news as long as possible but I have a feeling I won't be seeing this on the 5 o'clock news.

The government has been perfecting rubber-hose and waterboard decryption techniques for years at places like Guantanamo.

Like that's ever worked.

56 of the 100 senators have been in office less than 10 years. 31 of those have been in office for less than 5 years.

246 of the 433 house members have been in office less than 10 years. 150 of those have been there less than 5 years, and 103 of those have been in LESS THAN TWO YEARS.

In other words, you basically get a new senate majority every 10 years, and you get a new house majority every 3-5 years.

Throwing people out as the cure assumes you are throwing the right people in behind them. Which is not the case, as the drumbeat goes on unchanging house after house, senate after senate, despite everyone getting thrown out consistently.

Scary to think how large the percentage of the general population can not express a word problem mathematically.
