A good thread on the LoH DH tank.

Tested out the LoH spec in open game play Tuesday while I had a half day. Aside from the occasional impossible to kill elite pack it works great. The life regen is so fast you can stand in fire/acid/etc. and still live while tanking those elites. The only real killer attributes are Arcane and Frozen. Did Act2 Inferno from start to finish in a 4 player public game as a DH tank. I got a ton of compliments. I'll be looking into upgrading my 'test' LoH gear to some better stuff over the next few days.

After being stuck in Act 2 for quite a while with a standard glass cannon build, I decided to give this a try as well. I spent probably just under 1 million gold on new gear and gave it a shot. For the most part, it was a much easier experience. The occasional Arcane, Desecrator and Molten all in one groups not withstanding.

Unfortunately, I now seem to be stuck at Belial. I only tried for a bit, but I haven't figured out how I'm going to get passed him. From what I'd read, the main issue with fighting him as this build is the enrage timer, but from the few tries I gave it, I wasn't staying alive long enough for that to be an issue. Guess I'll have to do some reading on strategies for that fight.

It's not for the faint of heart though. I drop down to 10% life pretty often then right back to full life in the matter of 1-2 seconds. The life gauge is always going up and down fast so you really have no way to know if your going to live or die at any given point. It took me a while to start to get comfortable with that play style. It was fun just straight tanking Zoltun Zulle and his 2 guards without moving for anything. I did move once to get him out of a slow bubble to help the dps though. The only boss I had to make some changes for is Belial. There's no way to tank his final form so I went hybrid tank/dps on abilities. Just enough to tank the first 2 phases and just enough dps on the 3rd phase to help kill him faster.

Invested another 500,000 into gear last night. Upgraded my health from 26k to 47k, resists from 400ish to 500ish, LoH from 1.1k to 1.3k, armor from 3200 to 3500, & attack speed bonus from 12% to 15%. I haven't tested the upgrades yet but I'm sure it will make it work much better.

I bought a few upgrades as well, but Belial is still destroying me. The best I managed was getting him to a little under half health in phase 3, and most of my other efforts hardly made a scratch on him in that phase. For some reason, my Life on Hit procs seem to virtually disappear in that phase (obviously, they're going to slow down when there's only one enemy, but they seem to stop almost completely). I'm wondering if I'm missing him with the gas grenades or something due to the odd positioning off the edge of the platform. Because of this, I can't stand in the acid pools he drops at all, as they kill me almost instantly, even if I try both Gloom and the shield turret at the same time, but I'm also dying sometimes even before he starts dropping the pools.

For anyone that's managed to beat him with a spec somewhat like this, what abilities did you use, and what gear level are you at? I'm at approximately 40k health, 5k armor, 400 Resist, 1.2k LoH and 11k DPS, which I thought should be doable for this fight if I specced for a bit more DPS to beat the enrage timer, but it doesn't seem like I'm close. I'm thinking of trying to up my resists a bit, but that's probably going to mean dropping something else down at the gear level I can afford.

When you fought him, did you dodge around all the acid pools, or were you able to stand in them with LoH? I watched one video of someone just standing in one place the whole fight and using nothing but gas grenades, but I'm assuming their gear far exceeds mine.

The only thing about your stats that jumps out is low dps. I'm at 22k dps and that's considered low. I dodge the explosions myself. It's pretty easy to do that but sometimes RNG will kill you. That's just how it works. I use Impale with Chem Burn as my main dps attack on that fight only. I switched out cannoneer for sharpshooter as well. I tank stuff in phase1 and phase 2 as normal. In phase 3 I play like a ranged dps. I dump all my hate into Impale then toss some grenades to get hate back. Repeat this while dodging his attacks and you win. The hard part is you lose the 25% damage reduction for caltrops on phase3 and that's noticeable when your not leeching life fast.

Thanks - I'm mostly running the "Full tank spec" from the linked guide (the original thread seems to have been deleted, so here's the new one - »us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6202180373 ). It lists typical DPS for that spec as "Sub 18k DPS (Usually 10-15k)", so I should be in range, though a bit on the low end. I may try swapping back to some of my glass cannon gear for that fight, though managing to live through phases 1 and 2 in that gear may be an issue.

I'm running the full tank spec except I use a 2h xbow instead of a 1h xbow and shield.

Here's a post on Belial I found that might help you.

"For those stuck on Belial, this build tears him to pieces in 2 minutes with only 10k dps.

»us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/d···V!cYbYcY

The unlimited hatred lets you spam Cluster Bombs all day long and belial cops all 5 bombs plus the mortar explosion for 1100%+ dmg...woot...!

Grenadier could probably be swapped with cull the weak, not sure if 15% bonus dmg applies to belial though."

Hmm, I tried pretty much that exact build, except I was using the Loaded for Bear rune on Cluster Arrow instead of Cluster Bomb, maybe I'll give that one a try. Thanks.

I'll be home in about 3 hours so just send me a PM if you want help on Belial. I can hop on my wiz or DH.

The other high damage one instead of Cluster Rocket w/Cluster Bombs is Rapid Fire w/Bombardement.

I think I'm as capped out as I can be without having 50-100m to dump into gear. I'm at 625-700 res, 6800 armor, 1500 LoH, 45000 health, and 13000 dps on my DH tank. Some combo's of elites will still kill me in 5 seconds while others I can tank forever even through enrage. In a group of 4 last night all 3 other people died on Ghom within the first 5% of his life so I ended up solo'ing Ghom while the other 3 people watched. It wasn't even close as my health never went down while tanking him in one spot not moving for anything.

How much have you spent on your current gear (and if you have an easy way to list it by piece, that would be great, if it's too much work to do though, don't bother)? I made it passed Belial and into Act III finally (I didn't really try much of Act III, as I was only on for a little while over the weekend), but I can already see that it's going to be more difficult than Act II was, as two of the three groups of elites I fought killed me rather easily.

The problem I'm running into trying to upgrade is that for prices I can afford, maybe around 1 million for a piece max, everything seems to be a tradeoff from what I have now, rather than an actual upgrade. I can raise my resists, but it lowers my armor and health, or raise my health, but I lose resists, etc. I'm thinking maybe I need to refocus certain pieces on certain stats, but from my AH searches so far, I haven't seen anything that would be a major improvement.

Thanks.

I don't have any quotable references right now, but I ran across mention of DHs perma-locking mobs by having like 3% stun and 3% fear?, etc. With double crossbows, they can chain CC on mobs. Anyone else heard/tried this? I can see it being possible, since with high IAS they can shoot fast enough to trigger another CC before the first one wears off.

Edit: Why do people even post an item for 1,500,000,000 ?? I mean at $2.50 per 1M gold, that's $3750. I guess they are trying to find rich people as stupid as they are greedy... :P

I didn't spend more then 400k on a single piece yet. Most pieces were in the 100-200k range. I ended up bidding on a few pieces to get good deals and just watching the ah randomly while watching tv to get the other good deals. Since I started the DH tank I'm down 2.5m total but some of that was resale and other characters. I'm guessing I have 1.5-1.75m into DH tanking right now. I got lucky on a weapon for example. It's a 1h xbow 768 dps, 149 vit, socket, & LoH 628 for about 150k. Those are normally 3-5m alone. A lot of my gear is worth 1-2m each but paid 200-400k for it.

I'll see if I can add up the gear costs from the log. Curious how much I have into it exactly.

It seems like the tank DH build is most likely dead -

quote:
Caltrops (db)
Skill Rune – Jagged Spikes
Can no longer trigger procs

Chakram (db)
Skill Rune – Shuriken Cloud
Weapon damage increased from 30% to 34% Proc coefficient reduced from 0.333 to 0.125

Grenades (db)
Skill Rune – Gas Grenades
Proc coefficient reduced from 0.5 to 0.165
It's a shame, because since switching to this build, I'd actually been having a lot of fun with the game, and I was looking forward to the other changes they'd announced for this patch. I'll wait to actually see the changes and will look around and see if there's any way to substitute in other skills and maintain a relatively similar playstyle, but if not, I think this may be it for me for D3. I don't enjoy the glass cannon style in this game, and I don't feel like trying to level and gear another class, so I may not be left with much other choice.
