Moving to nyc - where to start?

Hey guys!

Im starting a new job this monday in the bronx as a store manager for walgreens. Currently i live in connecticut.

I do own a car and im wondering where is a good place to live and affordable?

My income would be around 75k and have no kids.
Just me and the wife.

I think rent between 1000-1200 is do- able.

For that income and in the Bronx, you can easily find a 1-bedroom in Pelham Bay or Throgs Neck for roughly $1200, and have plenty to spare.

But obviously people's discretionary spending habits are different so you would have to do your numbers.

If your wife works also, and you are a dual-income household, I would say look more around Westchester rather than The Bronx.

It also depends if you want to live in a more city'ish type area, or a more suburban type area. If you want the more city'ish area, then I would suggest looking around Yonkers, New Rochelle, and White Plains.

If you rather a more suburban type area, then look in other areas in Westchester.

My best recommendation is to look in White Plains. It's a pretty quick/easy commute to The Bronx, and a very nice area.

The Bronx sucks. (no offense)

And what are you talking about? Pelham Bay and Throgs Neck, both of which Network Guy See Profile recommended, are both in The Bronx.

LOL! Sorry about that, I meant Westchester.

Westminster is a street near me.

Since when did they start hiring outside applicants to the Store Manager position at Walgreens?
Or were you promoted from EXA?

the north manhattan areas near the GWB of washington heights, fort george, inwood might be suitable - don't rule them out as being a couple living only a subway ride away from everything has advantages living in westchester won't give you.

What part of the Bronx, and what part of Connecticut?

If you live out of the city, you don't pay a city commuter tax, if you live in Yonkers, you will pay a Yonkers income tax.

@mycingular.net

Currently im living at new rochelles residense inn till i find a place. luckily walgreens is helping me out with it.

I am sorry for the late reply too a lot of stuff going on very fast.

I wouldnt mind the bronx at the moment either. The area where my store is is good according to everyone that works there. right now i still havent started to look yet.

as for the last question- i wanted to move to nyc and this was a lateral promotion- except with the new tier pay etc versus CT.

I don't know where your store is, but the Kingsbridge section is pretty decent. West 230s, west of Broadway.

I found a nice building located right off the hutch. I think it's Morris park or pelham gardens.

Rent is 1250 for one bedroom and parking is $100 a month.

I was going to go with Fios but ended up with optimum.

I think its mostly cement and steel for structure and plaster for walls inside apartment. The square footage is 1,150. 2 windows face street and a building, two more face a park.

It's a 6 story building and im on 5th, we have 5 or 6 apartments each floor. There is 2 elevators so it's always fast.

The location is great as street parking isn't to difficult either and to have the hutch and 95 a minute away is just great. I love NYC transportation, but i love driving way more.

I'm starting to realize that people in NYC do not know how to drive at all- i'm alwauys finding myself shaking my head at New yorkers that crawl up into an intersection that is congested because the light is green and then starts honking at everyone.

i'm gonna keep a lot of pennies in my car so i can start tossing it at the taxi cabs each time they honk their car - like they do in nigeria. where most of these cab drivers look like they are from.
