Re: SB6120 Firmware Updated (7/19/12)

I got to be honest I was all excited about the firmware and why? I have no idea I just like new stuff but ever since the update mine is logging all kinds of new logs I have never seen my upstream power is all ovcer the damn place and I did not think firmware would affect that but it seems to have unless something else has gone wrong but what are the chances of that happening at the same time as the update. Comcast would you please come and get this firmware and shove it please?? Thanks.

No dice here. I'm still seeing quite a few reboots. It looks as though signal levels are all over the place so it might an amp or something and unrelated to software. I'll probably end up messaging ComcastSteve and possibly having a truck rolled. Going to try switching the splitter right now and see if that makes any difference.

EDIT: Keep It Simple Stupid? Been watchin it for 30 minutes now and after changing that splitter out everything seems to be solid. Wouldn't have been my first though that an 8 month old splitter would have gone bad like that. It's not like the tv side has shown any issues and the internet works fine most of the time.

EDIT2: Looks like that didn't fix the issue. Was good for a day or so now I'm having issues again.

As mentioned, I rebooted a few days ago. Since then, no issues. I did have several T4 reboots over the previous 2-3 weeks, but nothing since the reboot. No new messages in the log at all after one T3 during the initial reconnection.

My upstream levels have always been a bit flakey. Currently down to about 47 on a cool morning. I've seen it as high as 51-52 during some of the hottest days.

How many different versions of the firmware has Comcast pushed out. In Northwest NJ with a Performance tier I got this:

SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb6120_silverpboost_c01.cm

That is a config file, not a firmware update. If I remember correctly how Comcast names their config files, that is a DOCSIS 1.1, "silver" speed tier with PowerBoost enabled, and a single IP address. I don't know what Comcast currently considers the "silver" speed tier, but back when I had Comcast residential HSI, it was 4mbps downstream (at my location...YMMV).

I saw the same line (except it has "sb6121") in my SB6121's log file, here in Central NJ, when it was updated with the new firmware early Friday morning.

I'm on the Performance tier and get 16/2 sustained, 25/4 with PowerBoost.

Don't know what difference there might be in the config files for these 2 similar models. Even the firmware version is the same for both (using just "SB612X" in its filename).

Rebooted cable modem and picked up new firmware. Everything working OK so far. I ran a Netalyzr check and did see a significant improvement in downstream buffering numbers to 180ms from a previous 500ms average.

The naming convention reuses names. Disregard the "D1.1" in the name. It is not a DOCSIS 1.1 config. file.

So in other words, these days only a Comcast network engineer has a clue as to what any given config file does?

Well; yes!
We noticed this reusing of config names when Comcast took over former Adelphia areas that were already DOCSIS 2.0. We were seeing nothing but "D1.1" naming in our config files, but in actuality they were D2.0 files. This "reusing" of existing names continues.

The way I see it, the network people know what the file does because they can see what is in it. It is the customer who just sees the name and hasn't a clue.

I got this same upgrade a few days ago on my SB6120 (and we JUST got D3 here within the past week. Good things come bundled together I guess!). My modem still reports IPv4, but I'll take what I can get out here. I also noticed the weird config file name - saw that I had downstream channel bonding but a "d11" in the config file. I figured it was some weird naming scheme quirk, and judging from previous posts that's what it is.

Amusingly this firmware still has the bug where after certain reboots/resets, despite being fully 100% online and functional, the Status page still shows:

Cable Modem Status Offline

Another factory reset + reboot will fix that.

Two things I've noticed about the firmware change:

1. The Signal page now has Ranging Status information per-channel on the Upstream channels (my log above doesn't show that; I need to add the proper code to my script). But for example:

Channel ID 9 7 8
Ranging Status Success Success T4 TimeOut

2. EDIT: Seems the "IPv6 Only" thing I was reporting was just a fluke as a result of the upgrade. It went away (went to "IPv4 Only" which is what I'm used to seeing) once I did a second factory reset + reboot. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen this. Sorry for the noise.

3. There's an "Open Source" menu now listing off all the stuff used to build the firmware.

After a 2nd factory reset + reboot, and me updating my script that pulls stats for my logs, looks good:

I had a T4 reboot Sunday around noon. Upon starting, it logged this new error:
Jul 29 2012 11:09:32 5-Warning U103.0 Initializing Channel Timeout Expires - Time the CM can perform initial ranging on all upstream channels in the TCS has expired

I had that 'offline' message. I just did a plain reboot, and it connected back normally.

I wish I knew what was going on. Just had another T4 timeout...

I'm in Castro Valley, CA.

My modem got stuck and needed a reboot, so I power cycled it, and also received the firmware upgrade just a few days ago:
quote:
Model Name: SB6120
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.6-SCM00-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot 1.0.0.4m1
Hardware Version: 3.0
Serial Number: 317001026603836405040011
Firmware Build Time: Apr 17 2012 15:09:37

Name of configuration file = d11_m_sb6120_silver_c01.cm

Good to see this upgrade! I checked for an IPv6 address, and unfortunately, no love yet.

Does something specific have to be done to enable an IPv6 address, or is it something you just automatically pick up when Comcast chooses to flip the switch on their side? My router already supports IPv6 and automatically searches for an address on each interface. It only found the link-local address (starting with fe80::) which doesn't work, but this tells me that at least it's searching.

If your router supports the DHCP method that Comcast uses, it should be automatic (although some routers may need to be manually set to use DHCP for IPv6 instead of depending on automatic detection).

I don't have Comcast's native IPv6 at my location yet and my Netgear router does not automatically detect Comcast't 6to4 tunnel (I have to manually select that in the router's IPv6 setup page), but my directly connected server boxes automatically connect to Comcast's 6to4 tunnel. I suspect that when I do get Comcast's native IPv6, I may have to setup my Netgear router for either DHCP or Fixed instead of automatic detection (but I won't know until it happens, especially since Comcast has been keeping mum about how they are going to handle business class static IP accounts).

Yeah, that's kind of cool. I just rebooted my modem and got the new firmware. I like seeing what the modem is running. I had a feeling it was Linux-based, but wasn't sure, until now.

So did I...so I rebooted. Everything came back as normal...then five minutes later, back to "not started"/"offline" again on the status page. Also T4 showing up on upstream channel 11 and downstream SnR has been trending around the 35 range for the past week or so (it's usually higher).

I still have that warm fuzzy feeling, and it appears the ping count was lower and a snappier internet experience, and this was before the whole "speed increase" that was rolled out.

My questions to you are, what results are we supposed be seeing?

Also, what results are you seeing personally?

What results is Comcast seeing on their end?

Yeah I did notice that whole "offline" thing even though I was still browsing the web just fine. I rebooted for the hack of it and it went back to "operational" status, so I thought nothing of it.

Seems somewhat laggier to me, to be honest and I've been seeing some strange things from ShaperProbe as well (upstream down to ~700kbps in a couple of instances). Cable lines around here are trash so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

Finally got the new firmware here this morning - did a modem reset and build time went from April 2010 to April 2012...nice but no speed differences. Also need to call them and find out where those doubled speeds they promised in the news release.

Whatever, at all costs, avoid the SB2120. Never had a more defective modem in my life, even back when we had 14.4k dial ups....I had 2 field service reps that just told me flat out get a different modem b/c of the amount of complaints they were having regarding that modem.

I recommend the uBee DDM3513. Great modem, rented one from Comcast for 4 months until I settled at my new residence, bought the SB2120. Lets just say I didn't have internet for weeks on end. Read my problems with it in an earlier post. Check it out: »[Connectivity] Connectivity and speed issues,7 tech visits...
