This is really sad. These people just wanted to enjoy themselves and watch a new movie with friends/family.

I was impressed with one interview I heard with one official (I think it might have been the police chief), where he was saying that some police cars that were responding to the scene got some of the injured in them and off to local hospitals right away because they were the first on the scene and some of the injured needed immediate attention.

I don't think that anything can deter someone who is totally whacked, but we don't know how many people who are only partly whacked [do] get deterred. We don't hear about the ones who don't do anything.
But in any event, it's not only about deterrence.
It's about revenge, and in a premeditated mass murder I don't see a damn thing wrong with revenge.
It's about the guy NOT being around in years to come to make money on a book deal, to have crazy women falling in love with him, to distort and twist the world so that HE becomes the victim, to constantly be a daily scab of a reminder to the families, and to be a recurrent heartache for the families as they have to attend parole hearings every few years.
Also, even if he is never executed, as a death row prisoner he is held in much less pleasant conditions than the other inmates. |
