[Thunderbird] How does Thundebird do in Windows 7?

Just curious. There was a well known font problem and I experienced it with Thunderbird in XP.

I've just installed it on my Win 7 computer today and it seems fine but it's early in its life.

Anything I can expect with it? Good? Bad?

Thanks

Curious about the font problem that you mentioned? I have been using Thunderbird on Windows Vista and Windows 7, I have not seen any font related issues. Saying that, attachment with non-ascii characters are not displayed properly, forcing me to rename the attachment if I want to save the file.

1 edit

It's a problem which has existed for 8 plus years. I wish I had the URL of site I used to visit. I gave up in disgust and installed Postbox which is fine and very similar to TB.

I surprised you are not aware of it. Anyway, I have many samples of the problem but rather go into detail my question is can I expect any with Win 7.

The problem in a nutshell is that users will be typing away and all of a sudden the font would change. I also experienced the same with SeaMonkey (its cousin).

Hmmm, can't say that I have encountered such problem, unless I typed in the "signature" region. I wonder if the font change has anything to do with the designated area for your signature within the e-mail.

FWIW, I've been using Thunderbird on my home-built Win7 computer for the last year, through quite a few updates, with absolutely no font issues.

Great, that's what I'm looking for.

I've only used it a few hours and it seems fine.

The only differences between Postbox and Thunderbird is that Postbox was $30 and worked and Thunderbird has smileys which I like.

Thanks folks.

To echo what newview See Profile said, I have been using Thunderbird on my my home built Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit system since Windows 7 came out, and I've had no font issues at all.

Started with Thunderbird 8.0.0, and upgraded as each version came out all the way to the current one, which is 14.0.0.

Well, I was able to use Thunderbird successfully for a little while and it, too, did the font change thing.

Just to clarify, you're ONLY typing in the compose window and this happens? No copy/paste? Anything else that you're doing, other format changes (I see the color change, for example), etc?

So, let me try to understand what is happening here.

You open a new message, and you type the first line, which in your case is the one on top, which says "Nope, never saw it before.".

Then, you type the next line "Wendi, look what hppened to the font....." and in your case, the font changed from big to small, and I'm guessing you did nothing to cause it to do that?

Is that the issue?

What may be happening is this. Now, I'm going to try to explain here, and it may be hard, as it does depend on the way you click and type in the message. So, I hope this makes sense.

If you have an e-mail message, and you have space below where you are typing, and you change the font size for a given line..it will not automatically change all the lines below that to the same font. For example, if I open a new message, and hit enter a dozen or so times so I have 12+ lines. If I then go to Line #8, change the font to be bigger and bold, and type something, it will show up that way.

Then, if I click the mouse down to line #12 (not press enter, as I already have the lines there), and type, I won't have that same font. It will be whatever your default font is, as the font was not modified below. See Picture #1 for example. However, if you keep typing on line 8, press enter at the end, and go on, your font will stay. But, since you had blank lines below where you made your font change, those won't get modified unless you highlight everything, and then change the font.

It will also do it on the same line, depending on how you edit the text.

If I am again on Line #8, and I change the font and add bold before I type anything, and then type "This is line "

Note the SPACE after the e. I then take my mouse, and click somewhere else (line 10 for example), and then go back to Line 8, and click the mouse at the end of the line, and hit a space (as I did not remember doing it), I will get what is shown in Picture #2. I did not change the font in that case, it did it "on its own".

I don't think that is the case, I think what is happening is that when I clicked on line 8 in my example, I clicked "outside" the tag that was put in place for the font change, so it would not be updated to the new font.

If you recall back to the days of Word Perfect, there was a mode that allowed you to see the "special characters". What I think is going on here is that Thunderbird sets "special characters" in the e-mail to tell it to change the font size, bold, etc. If you type beyond that range, the font change won't take effect.

Microsoft Word somewhat does this too...it only applies the format change at that point in time, and does not modify existing text (above or below) where it was done.

Again, while I'm not sure that is what you are doing, I believe this is what Thunderbird does as far as font changes go. There is a specific area that changes, and if you move your cursor outside of that range, the font changes don't apply. I also hope that I explained it right, as this is hard to do without actually showing you while I'm doing it.

Yep, just typing in the compose window.

This is a common bug which has persisted for at least 8 years.

I used to use SeaMonkey and the Mozilla gang shifting TB code over to SeaMonkey and then SM started doing the same thing so after years of doing it, I reluctantly gave up on SeaMonkey.

I did not save the URL of the site where all the complaints were reported. I wish I had.

My solution was to switch to Firefox and use Postbox for email. The postbox people have supplied some help to the TB people. Postbox doesn't have smileys and that's what prompted me to ask about TB's behavior with Windows 7.

This is not a big deal to me since I have Postbox for my email.

That's the secret, Randy. We have discussed it a couple of years ago. I'm just a stubborn old cuss and want my own way.

Thanks for the post, plencnerb

There have been several attempted temporary fixes but they are too complicated in most cases and not worth the effort. I have touted Postbox to this gang of complainers, many of whom run businesses but I guess they didn't want to invest $30 in the Postbox software which is good for ever computer they own. I think Postbox is $20 now. They lowered the price 31 days after I bought it.

I have changed TB to variable width font but have not used it since I originally posted here, I'll give it a try to satisfy myself and then at least I will know. Then I will uninstall it.

Thanks all.

Good luck with it and yes, T-Bird is a bit of a stickler for reproducing font styles you select.
