ACCN10 CWTO 252017 Forecast of thunderstorm potential for the province of Ontario Issued by Environment Canada at 4:17 PM EDT Wednesday 25 July 2012. The next statement will be issued at 4.00 AM Thursday. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Forecast of thunderstorm potential.
Tonight..Widespread thunderstorms expected over Southern Ontario With a squall line or several clusters of strong storms possible. There is a moderate risk that some of these storms may be severe With damaging winds and torrential downpours as the main threats and large hail as a lesser threat. There is also a very slight risk of a tornado. The greatest severe weather threat is in a corridor from Southern Lake Huron southeastwards towards the west end of Lake Ontario and the Niagara region. Isolated non-severe thunderstorms Are likely in the vicinity of the Lake of The Woods eastwards to the Atikokan region.
Thursday..Scattered thunderstorms are expected over Southern Ontario south of a line from Kincardine to Cornwall. There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail and torrential downpours over an area extending from Southern Lake Huron to Central Lake Ontario and south, mainly in the afternoon and evening. A few thunderstorms are also expected over Northwestern Ontario south of a line from Kenora to Thunder Bay. They may contain small hail and gusty winds.
Friday..Isolated non-severe thunderstorms are expected over Southwestern Ontario in the afternoon and evening. Some of these storms may approach severe limits due to hail and wind, especially over the extreme southwest, near Lake Erie.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- A thunderstorm is defined as severe if it produces one or more of the following:
- wind gusts of 90 km/h or greater. - hail of 2 centimetres in diameter or greater. - rainfall amounts of 50 millimetres or greater in one hour or less. - a tornado.

said by digitalfutur:Our drought ended on Sunday with 2 hours worth of heavy thunderstorms, and a few more on Monday. Before that, not a drop in 3 weeks. Two thunderstorms does not end a drought. According to Environment Canada most of Southern Ontario is under record dry or extremely dry conditions as of July 24, including Burlington. Furthermore, in the last 30 days nearly the entire area except for the extreme southwest has had less than 40% of its normal precipitation.
This is already a major concern for growers, and is going to become an outright emergency soon enough. |

Looks like it'll be another 4ish or 5 hours before it hits us around Woodstock. Should be a good light show, since I'm off for the next two weeks I think I'll stay up and watch. |

| Detroit TV is going nuts right now, they've even broken into shows to provide updates on the storms and are tracking the progress every few minutes. Light show is starting up to the north. Really looking forward to the lightning as EC specifically said it should be one hell of a show out there. Hoping for a fun night. Stay safe everyone. |

digitalfuturSees More Than ShownPremium join:2000-07-15 BurlingtonON kudos:2 | reply to Gone I'd estimate we received 50-80 mm of rain on Sunday alone, a series of heavy thunderstorms that rolled through. Very localized though, Burlington/Ancaster and North Hamilton.
So our "percent of average precipitation" is in the 60%-80% range now. -- Logic requires one to deal with decisions that one's ego will not permit. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. |

| said by digitalfutur:So our "percent of average precipitation" is in the 60%-80% range now. No, the percentage of average precipitation is exactly what's on those maps, as they're updated daily and the most recent was from the 24th. The heavy rain that Hamilton got that caused flooding on the mountain was already taken into account in the most recent data and shows up there. If you're in Burlington, you're still in a drought. That is just how *bad* this summer has been.
Either way, a single thunderstorm - no matter how much rain falls - does not correct a drought. It takes a lot more rain over a longer period of time to correct long dry spells such as what we've experienced this summer. The rain we'll receive tonight will help, but it will by no means return things to normal. |
