Re: [olympics] London Olympics 2012 underway quote: A boxing referee from Turkmenistan was expelled from the London Olympics on Thursday for his handling of a bout in which the result was overturned on appeal.
Boxing's governing federation, known as AIBA, released a statement saying referee Ishanguly Meretnyyazov ''is on his way back home.''
In a bantamweight bout, Magomed Abdulhamidov of Azerbaijan fell to the canvas six times in the third round against Satoshi Shimizu of Japan, yet still won a 22-17 decision.
Meretnyyazov allowed the fight to continue after each tumble, and he enraged the Japanese team by fixing the headgear worn by Abdulhamidov, who had to be helped from the ring after winning. AIBA overturned the result late Wednesday night, saying Meretnyyazov should have counted at least three knockdowns and stopped the bout.

They are in the final against Argentina after a difficult semi against New-Sealand (great respect to the New-Sealand women!). That's going to be a great game... |

The problem I see going forward is when does it become an advantage and what would be the rules on how far you could go with mechanical assist from stuff like this.I mean whats to stop someone from going RoboCop like aides on his feet.Where does it end? | That's a lot of medals.
I was watching some of the closing ceremonies last night and found it amazing that one of the US competitors was looking forward to getting back to class at her high school after winning a gold medal at the Olympics. FobulousPremium join:2002-08-14 Missouri City, TX | reply to ZZZZZZZ I have been saying all along that international refs are the worst, this relates to refs to all sports not just boxing. Frankly, i have no idea who these refs got their jobs sometimes i even wonder if they know what game they are judging. A great example is when they called "out" on a US Women's spike during the volleyball game against Korea and when looking at the replay it was clearly in! The spike was cross court and you would think the refs trained on how to judge on cross court close calls but clearly either they were blind or the refs had relatives living in Korea.. --

FobulousPremium join:2002-08-14 Missouri City, TX | reply to KeysCapt Can anyone here please explain to me why the this AIBA thing allows a judge who is Muslim and who is from Central Asia to be in a boxing bout that features a fellow Muslim fighter that is from the same Central Asia area!? On top of which the opponent is from East Asia!? Shouldn't they use a judge that is from completely different geographic, cultural and religious background? oh i dunno maybe someone from Europe or Central America!?!??!
AIBA should just dissolve and go home because these boxing matches are just jokes.. --

AIBA should just dissolve and go home because these boxing matches are just jokes.. By your logic you can't have a Christian Judge do a match which involves a Christian or a Jewish judge referee a game involving a Muslim. These Judges are are chosen for their skill and knowledge of the sport they are judging. -- A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything he says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

FobulousPremium join:2002-08-14 Missouri City, TX | No. my logic says that not only this guy is Muslim but he is from the general area of the boxer.. it's like having an American Boxer fighting a European one and the judge is European.. Of course Muslims in one area would mean that they feel they are in the same clan which could be worse. --
